Technically a 5-year deal that voids after 2017, gains the team some pretty major cap room in the here and now. I would not be surprised if they made a trade for a pretty big contract in the next few days, maybe Talib.

Just speculating. He's the only player I know of on the trade market that would command a lot of money. With the roster already set for this year, they could've shunted the bulk of the signing bonus into 2017 but they chose to do it this year instead. Cleared more than 16 million in cap space, but it doesn't make any sense to do that unless you're going to actually spend it. They could also use a guard or right tackle.

Not bad. I'm surprised the Saints didn't really screw themselves over with future cap here. At least I don't think they did, I haven't looked at the details/breakdown.

Maybe finally that Ron Leary trade.

Ugh. Hope not, he's nothing special. They did bring back Jahri Evans today but I can't imagine they're giving him more than $2m or so.

Should surpass Manning in YDS & TDs within the next 2-3 years.

Random fact - his 10 year run in NO has been the most successful of any QB in history.

He's almost exactly 11K yards behind Manning for all-time passing yards, which is about 2 seasons and a couple games assuming he continues to throw around 5K a year. Should pass Favre for the completions record right about the same time. Touchdowns is a little tougher, he typically throws around 35 a year but that would still leave him 10-15 short going into the 2020 season. He already has career completion % by a lot, that's one that might not ever be broken.

It is my understanding that a QB needs to win several Super Bowls to be considered successful...being amazing at the position is not good enough when comparing players of that position...

Until Rodgers has his tenth year in Green Bay ;)

Great signing for the saints. Bree's is one of the truly elite QBs

Well, if you need a road grader at LG, Leary is a good option this late into the season.

UNSUCCESSFUL

But if that's not good enough for you:
Dan Fouts
Dan Marino
Jim Kelly
Warren Moon
Joe Namath
Ken Stabler
Brett Favre

All QBs in the Hall of Fame with zero or one Super Bowl wins....but yeah, you're right, those guys aren't successful.

This is essentially a retirement contract ,, Correct?

i don't think so.

as mentioned

Technically a 5-year deal that voids after 2017

BUT, if the deal is voided after '17, it would leave saints with 18M in dead cap... this could've been avoided if this was just a retirement deal (and/or the saints really wanted to keep the cap number low... now brees still has leverage on his next deal, as he had in this one, that huge tag number. saints gained by getting brees at discount cap hit and if his game falls off, they can cut ties (though with hefty price) after 2 seasons.

The auto-void is just a way to spread out some money over future years. For some reason if they didn't re-sign him in 2018 there would be $18 million dead money hit, then $12 million in 2019, and $6 million in 2020. I would say it's really really unlikely that he leaves the team before 2019 unless there is a catastrophic injury or something.
