@BNHarrington - NHL will have preseason "tester" games for 3-on-3 OT regardless of regulation score. Sabres home pre-season game vs Ottawa on Wednesday, September 23 to be one.

The NHL has designated 45 games on its preseason schedule as test cases for its 3-on-3 overtime period, meaning the new format will be played regardless of the score at the end of regulation. The Sabres will play their tester games during their exhibition opener Monday, September 21 in Minnesota, the home opener Wednesday, September 23 against Ottawa and the Thursday, October 1 return visit to Minnesota.

If those games end with a winner in regulation, that will be deemed the final score of the game and there will be no shootout if there are no goals in the OT session. If those games or any of Buffalo's other four preseason games are tied at the end of regulation, normal rules will apply. That means a shootout would be played if there are no goals scored in OT.

The league's release says the expanded use of 3-on-3 during this preseason will give players, coaches, management and on-ice officials a chance to test the new format in advance of the regular season. The league went through a similar preseason experiment when the shootout was introduced in 2005, using them in exhibition play even if the actual rules didn't call for them in that particular game.

Biggest story: will Jack Eichel make the team?

50/50 shot imo

HAMILTON: Sabres Climb Up Begins
Paul Hamilton

Buffalo, NY (WGR 550) -- After two very long years of some very bad hockey, it seemed like today would never arrive.

Two years of losing has netted the Sabres Sam Reinhart and Jack Eichel and rock bottom has been hit. The players report to training camp today and there’s nowhere else to go other than up.

Honestly there really aren’t too many jobs up for grabs in this camp, but it’s fun to try to figure out where the pieces fit.

I think Eichel's a done deal for making the team. Samson? probably, but, we can afford to have him play in Rochester.

My only prediction: they will take a long hard look at Guhle to try and gauge when he can turn pro.

McCormick likely to start the season on IR?

That might open one spot for a junior player to play few games before going back to juniors.

You think he gets any regular season games or back to junior before the preseason ends?

I bet we see him slotted in the top-4 with one or two of our current top-3 guys at least once during the preseason and probably one of the last to go back if things are going well for him. We saw some pretty big hand grenades during Boston game that illustrates he's still a ways away, so a regular season game is long shot.
