Sabres appoint Charlie Mendola as director of hockey strategy

Mendola, a 46-year-old East Amherst native, has been a coach with the Buffalo Jr. Sabres and also served as assistant director at the Academy of Hockey, where, according to the LECOM Harborcenter website, he was tasked with “leading and managing the creation, implementation, marketing and servicing of all LECOM Harborcenter Hockey and Academy programming.”
Mendola has also been executive director of the Buffalo Jr. Sabres’ Under-20 team in the Ontario Junior Hockey League, and at times, worked as an on-ice coach for the Academy of Hockey.

He played at RIT and he's a center!

Great hire! Adams is killing it! What does a director of hockey strategy do?

Cool, maybe now the team will realize they're supposed to play hockey now that they have a director of strategy.

Teams have got to be envious of the sheer amount of homegrown workers the Pegulas have been able to develop since they came here. You just know they are in preparations of creating their own team structure thanks to the inspiration of the winning ways of the Pegulas.

I think it has something to do with reassigning parking spaces after the layoffs. There's so many open spaces now employees are parking wherever they want and they just can't have that.

Exactly the guy we needed. Finally our players will know what to do. No wonder they never made the playoffs, without someone telling them to play hockey and win.

I am just imagining a guy who sits through all the meetings, head down playing a game on his phone.

A few months in, someone says "Lets see what the director of strategy says"

Without looking up, he says "Score more goals than the other team"

What are the odds this guy is just a friend of the Pegulas?

Edit: I wonder if he’s looking at league trends, player trends, and advising Krueger and Adams?
Like game planning vs specific teams, or staying on top of all playing styles and general changes within the game?

Will fix everything
All joking aside, the idea that "we know better than everyone" that this hire (and the Adams hire) projects is very much a boom or bust proposition.

An inexperienced GM surrounded by people he came up professionally with might be a tight knit group that works well together, but it's also a group that hasn't been in a ton of high level situations and knows how to deal with them. And this is true of Krueger, who has limited NHL coaching experience.

Given, bad GMs who, over time, are proven to be awful, get short term success all the time. Look at Rutherford in Pittsburgh. The longer he's been there, the worse the team has gotten. But they also won 2 cups under his watch.

Time will tell whether this approach works or not.

He's a friend of Adams. They've known each for over 30 years. They're the same age and came up through the same hockey programs as kids. They probably played on some of same teams. Mendola was working in banking until Adams brought him into the HarborCenter operation.

Shocking. Very shocking.

I think it has something to do with reassigning parking spaces after the layoffs.

I don't like to pick at typos, but I presume you meant 'playoffs' - as in dealing with the scrum of media and out of town sorts who grabbed previously unallocated parking spaces as interest soared during the latter stages of next season's Stanley Cup run and are unwilling to give them up when the frenzy begins to subside...
