Great to see him signed and really surprised that he would sign for 5 years. Our D is very strong for the next 2 seasons and at that point Ekholm and Jones will be up for new contracts. If Ellis continues the way he played toward the end of last season we will look at this contract as such a bargain.

I think it's an overpayment. I don't see him supplanting any of our top 4 any time soon and to pay a 3rd pairing guy over $3 million towards the end of the deal is a misappropriation of funds. It's like what we did with our 4th line forwards, giving them around $8 million, bad idea. Lowest pairing and bottom line should not cost that much. Give your stars and big time ice guys money, give the rest scraps. That's what the big boys do.

If Ellis is part of our third pair, we have a solid D.
Looks like he can slide up when needed and not look out of place.

Rather pay him a little more than have Hillen/Gill/etc. back there.
Glad he's locked up, good deal.

he had a good season last year. It was a good deal, really liked it. He had an amazing junior career, but is a little undersized.

He fits the top guy on the 2nd PP unit greatly

I'm not sure about that. Jarret Stoll is practically a carbon copy of Guastad on a 2 time Cup winning team. Krug is a 3rd pairing PP specialist, just like Ellis. I'm sure there are more examples.

I guess it's alright, but he is still small in a world where D men and everyone else on the ice are getting bigger. He will be our Tootoo minus the grit in 3 years. Wait...what is a no grit Tootoo!!!

If he does not advance this year in the new system, there will be quite a few teams willing to take on this contract and give him a shot as there 3-4 D man and PP specialist. It is cap friendly and he is still well regarded IMHO by scouts. SO I think he has this year to show he can earn that contract with this org, and if he is not, they could easily shop him for something. A player under contract for 4 yrs at AAV 2.5M has much more trade value than one that is RFA and in last contract year...
