Among the scouting combine attendees without a thread is Saint John winger Mathieu Joseph, so to kick off his thread, here are two excerpts from his SNB player spotlight and February’s ISS risers:
Joseph joined the Sea Dogs halfway through the 2013-14 season and fit very well into a support role. He had just one goal in thirty games, but it was a memorable one. It was the game-winner in Saint John's 2-0 triumph in over the Foreurs in Val-d'Or - the game in which goalie Sebastien Auger set a QMJHL record with a 53-save shutout.
Joseph, from Chambly, Quebec, benefitted from that early exposure to the QMJHL, and returned to the team last season bigger and stronger. And it showed on the scoreboard.
The 18-year-old played a two-way game instinctively. He found chemistry on and off the ice with centre Samuel Dove-McFalls, creating a strong yet responsible scoring line, and a formidable duo on the penalty kill. He was willing to play a physical game, but displayed finesse as well.
Joseph's offensive game took off in the second half of the season, as he tallied 23 of his 42 points between January and March. His biggest highlight came February 6th, when he posted two goals and five points in a 6-2 victory over the Sherbrooke Phoenix, becoming just the sixth Sea Dog to record five points in a regular season game. He finished fourth on the team's scoring list.
Mathieu Joseph (Saint John Sea Dogs, QMJHL) – Two way winger that works hard and competes. Has a good skating stride with speed. His puck skills were fine. Like his energy and effort. Can be a bit of an agitator at times. Has a chance to develop into a fourth line energy guy at the NHL level.
