Russia D is better than in a long time?

Yet, based on all that evidence of what works on the international level, that Team Canada has gifted to the world, you are still going to stick with your formula of:

1.G
2.D
3.C

You're so colossally wrong, that yes, if you were on my beer league team I'd ship ya out to a high school rec league.

Goaltending and D are the most important.
Strong G/D are the only reasons many lesser countries can hang with the "big boys" in best-v-best. For example, Germany's chances of beating a Top 6 are exponentially higher if Grubauer plays the game of his life more so than Draisaitl.

To no surprise Canada's best team in history (at least statistically) was in 2014....a team led by the d-core.

Sergachev is a low-IQ player who should not be on any country's first pairing. It's actually depressing to see this.

Maybe Mintyukov will be the it-guy. Maybe someone else. Or maybe no one will.

I'm actually really liking the potential of the D in the future.

It won't be much good unless Russia develops its own Victor Hedman. All of these second-pairing guys are perfectly okay, but it all reflects a failure of the system to develop top defensive talent.

I'm being a little negative, but I'm just salty following Russian hockey since the early 90s.

I'm surprised you are low on them. Looks like a great group to me. Is it because of no Makar/Heiskanen/Hughes/Dahlin type?

Yes of course. You need that it-guy who does everything and QBs the PP. It's arguably your team's most important player. That and the first line centre, and Russia also lacks those types of guys.

Russia is developing good players right now, but there are glaring holes there. If we ice a national team right now we're not winning anything.

Looks like Mintyukov is tracking to be “that guy” on the backend for them, and potentially Nikishin once he comes over to Carolina. I think they need RD badly.

Right now? I would consider Sweden as the clear third and perhaps Finland before Russia at four as well. Depends how much Russias goalies would show up and make a difference in a single playoff game that particular day. But Finland clearly have better centers and a lot more depth in that position. A lot of smart centers that are capable of playing a winning game and buying their role on top of that.
I honestly believe that the Czechs with a growing D-core and Dostal in the net will be closing the gap to Russia and Finland in a couple of years, perhaps even Sweden.
Those Jiriceks, Svozils with Kulich, Sapovaliv (if his injury didn't destroy him), Sale, Benak, Dostal together with Necas, Pastrnak, Hronek, Zacha.
And let's not forget both Czechs and Finland have a lot to play for when playing against Russia.

Michkov can become crazy good but if he's a winger, will he be any better than a prime Ovechkin, Kucherov or Panarin? Because as mentioned. Malkin is not prime Malkin anymore and Kuznetsov (one of the biggest prospects I've witnessed, still remember his WJC's) aren't or hasn't become the leader that I expected.
And yeah, Russia has easily the best goalies but then again, only one can be on the ice at once and both Sweden, Finland and the US have one good goalie at the very least.

He's hurt?
Or was a while ago? I mean, injuries can be so crucial in young years. But I liked him a lot so perhaps I got worried a little extra. Because Puljujärvi and Juolevi got ruined by their injuries. I mean, you can't only blame injuries etc, I know. But depending on what injury you get and how often or long it holds you back is a factor.

I think he's played every game. Underwhelming scoring though but I'm not sure he will ever be a great point scorer. I think he ends up being someone's dream 3C!

I do blame the Oilers for JP but I will say that I think he'd be an amazing bottom 6 player. To me, he lacked hockey IQ but had this gorgeous toolset from his built to his skating and shooting. Either a Euroleague star or a bottom 6 NHL dynamo.

Sapo is the next Faksa to me.. and that's a compliment.

Thanks for the kind words on the Czechs. Time will tell.. this season, in general, is going very poorly for Czechs at every level it seems.lol

No?

probaly only Usa and Canada have better D right now

just focus on the sport, keep Politics Out of It
Might be a good idea to keep the Mintyukov-Lyubushkin pairing from the Ducks and I'd also insert Nikishin somewhere there.

Sweden seems better on paper.

Hedman - Karlsson
Dahlin - Gustafsson
Ekholm - Brodin

Something like that maybe?

Moscow, Russia
Buchnevich/Voronkov could easily be moved to C. which allows for:

Malkin
Buchnevich
Barbashyov
Voronkov

Kuznetsov’s lazy ass could be inserted into the lineup depending on the opponent.

It's right now. Russia won't play any international tournaments for awhile so Malkin will be too old in 2026-27. But Michkov showed he could and willing play the center position. Then Yurov plays center in KHL right now and looks fantastic.

So

Michkov
Yurov
Buchnevich
Voronkov

I can't say it looks that weak.

As to defense

Mintyukov
Nikishin
Zub
Gavrikov
Sergachev
Provorov
Romanov
Orlov (kinda old but still should be ok in 3-4 years)

And then you can use guys like Okhotyuk, Zamula, Alexeyev, Gulyayev, Mukhmadullin, Simashev, Silayev... Even Lyubushkin as #8 and PK specialist. That's going to be too many good/great players to choose from.
