Uh oh, this doesn't put the complete and total blame at the feet of the players, Russ Conway is about to get flamed...

Why would we do that? I will point out that his article was written Sunday, before Bettman's interview, before Gretzky basically called the NHLPA on lying. But aside from that, it was a fair enough article, from what Conway knew at the time, Sunday.

Leonsis and Hicks may bristle a bit at being called cheap.

Leonsis is of course the exact opposite of cheap, shelling out a bunch of money for guys like Jagr and getting a half-ass effort in return.

He's decided he's not getting his money's worth which is the same as saying people aren't worth what he was paying them. Players supposedly want to be paid what they're worth, but when an owner reconsiders that "worth," like Leonsis, that owner immediately gets ridiculed.

Since he's no longer a sap willing to overpay guys he's now persona non grata among the union and its goons and that -- and not the facts of his payrolls -- is why he's always in the Gang of 8 list that PA propagandists so like to talk about.

A lot of these owners have to be getting pissed off at the players and getting even more hardline. After spending more money on players, some out of their own pockets, than was really justified considering hockey's size as a sport, being characterized as the equivalent of sweat shop owners must gall some of them.
