yup, exact same defence, and exact same results... not sure why anybody ever expected anything less

Its actually a worse defence then last year... Let that sink in for a moment.

I still say take Sergachev at 4th and try to trade something else for Hamonic. Maybe a bigger deal of RNH for Hamonic and Nelson? I dunno just spitballing.

No idea what this may change with Anaheim's situation, do they move Fowler or Lindholm? Is Vatanen still on the block just with a shiny new contract in tow?

If they gave him a NTC in the final two years I think its safe to say he's off the block for now.

I think Demers is optimistic. Realistically:

Klefbom-Lovejoy
Sekera-Fayne
Davidson-Franson
Pardy

Lovejoys a cup winner and good character guy will sign for 3.25M for 4 years and guys will hate him because he can't play top pairing minutes. (See Andrew Ference)

I think at this point Chia needs to trade for someones rights and get them locked up. My preference would be Yandle for the second unit and have a Klefbom-Sekera top pairing with Yandle-Fayne second pairing and Davidson-Reinhart 3rd pairing. Nurse is first call up.

This is a pessimist lineup not a realistic one. A realistic one is getting Demers and not trading for any Dman.

Also we didn't hate Ference because he couldn't play top pair, we hated him cause he couldn't play bottom pair

It sucks how every team knows exactly what has been keeping our team in the gutter for years. Chia is going to have to make an offer a team can't refuse to get a sure thing player to fix the top end of our D. Or, we're just gonna have to take chances with guys with potential and hope we don't waste McDavid's entire time with the Oilers.

This does not.................???

This does not change a thing...........you heard of sign and trade..........makes it easier for the Oil........they would know how the salary affects their cap hit and cap max.

How?
That anchor Jultz is gone, Davidson has a year of experience, Sekera knows the systems now...

Ference won't play another game, Nikitin is gone

Vatanen was only ever going to be the smaller piece we needed for the blueline as we would have still had to go get a better D than Vatanen to play ahead of him. It does suck that that option is gone, but not the end of the world. If the Hamonic rumor is out there, that is still a better option. Picking up a bottom pairing PP specialist will be easier to fill than a top pairing RHD.

with a healthy Klefbon and Davidson, the improvement is already massive, let that sink in for a moment

I am starting to think we are trading a LHD for a RHD. Buffalo and WPG are obvious starting points. The other is Barrie in Colorado because they are nuts

Nurse for Trouba or Barrie+ is something that we probably end up seeing. Maybe Bogosian + as well.

I love Nurse but Klefbom is our long term #1 LHD, Sekera has a NMC. The best Nurse can be is a 3rd pairing dman and that is underusing his potential.

It's a bit early to assume Davidson will keep progressing.

Also if any of them get hurt (and they will) then it's going to get even uglier.

Pens fan coming in peace. Lovejoy is a good penalty killer who had a nice playoffs in a small EV role but will get overpaid. Absolutely not what you guys need.

As an outsider it seems to me that you guys have to trade RNH and Ebs and draft Tkachuk, and then go big on a top pairing D in a trade. Really though Barrie would be the guy.

Tkachuk - McDavid - XXX
Hall - Draisaitl - XXX

See if you cant find yourself a Hornqvist if you dont have one in the system.

Welp. Time to break out the weapons of mass-destruction, I say. OS Jones or Lindholm at 7.5 million-8 million. Hella bold, hella risky, but they're both simmering top young defencemen whom are going to be locked up long-term and far out of reach before long. It's pricey and the league reaction would be dicey, especially given our young, soon to be RFA's but in my opinion, at this point, you get your top defenceman, and then you clean up the rest of the mess afterwards. If other teams don't want to play nicely, neither should Chiarelli.

It's not even July and people are writing off the offseason. Yea, the easy options are evaporating but there's still a lot Chia can do.

How many other teams are going to be in on Demers? Why the hell would he choose to come to Edmonton? Demers might be the best dman left on the market I'm sure he'll find nice city to play for down in the states.

And Lovejoy on the top pairing isn't ideal but its so Oilers. Remember the hype they had around Fayne and Ference? They sign these guys at around 3-4M and then tell the fan base they're great players and they'll improve the defence. They then proceed to play them way over there heads and everyone questions the signing. Rinse and repeat, thats been our Oiler team for the past 6 years.

I don't see Barrie as a top pairing guy. He bleeds shots against bad. He needs protection at even strength. He's a great offensive weapon but he's no Letang overall.

Thing with the Ducks is they got Bieksa on a NMC and he just reupped with them after waiving from the Canucks. Highly doubt he would want to relocate the family again. With the expansion draft coming up, the Ducks will probably go with protecting 7 f, 3 d, so if Bieksa is out, that leaves 2 spots amongst Fowler, Lindholm,Vatanen....still a good chance one of them gets shipped out.

We currently still have the absolute worst defence in the league and our options are steadily dwindling... I couldn't give a crap at this point if we have to trade Hall/RNH/Draisaitl at a perceived loss, this team will never flourish with the garbage defence we currently have.

We're being realistic based on the last 10 offseasons or so

In the last offseason we went from the worst goaltending to middle of the pack, this season from the softest team to middle of the pack.

We can maybe not have the worst D

Let's have some faith

We're being realistic based on the last 10 offseasons or so

I'm usually the biggest pessimist of the Oilers in the offseason. When Nikitin signed, I knew we were done. When Reinhart was acquired, I knew we weren't going to make it. When we signed Ference, I knew the basement was near.

I am still hopeful for now this year because there are still options on the table.

If I'm hopeful, everyone on the board should remain hopeful.

It's all fine and dandy until you give Luke Schenn 4M a year.

:)

Demers will want to come for the same reason Sekera wanted to Come. McDavid,Rogers place and McDavid, also has his former coach here.

Now what makes you think that Demers won't come but lovejoy would.
