I’d rather they try this then:
Nurse - Barrie
Koekkoek - Bouchard
Russell - Bear
But I think sitting Larsson (or Bear for that matter) isn’t going to happen and they are definitely a part of the top 6 D on the team IMO
Bouchard/Larsson would be a disaster imo. Bouchard needs someone who's defensively responsible and can skate. Kris Russell.
I'd go
Koekkoek - Bear
Nurse - Barrie
Russell - Bouchard
I just don't think it's smart to scratch Larsson after having a pretty good game.
Maybe we keep it conservative next game and go:
Nurse - Barrie
Koekkoek - Bear
Russell - Larsson
Although that 3rd pairing breaking the puck out would be scary.
Our goalies had a .937 save % last year when Russell was on the ice last year. It’s understated how much he helps the goalies and makes their lives easier.Say what you will about Russell but he rarely makes a "WTF?" type of play like Nurse and Larsson each had this season going for the big hit, missing, and leading to a GA.
I don't agree that Larsson had a pretty good game.
The thing with Bouch is Barrie is on the team and he isn’t getting on the PP so how do you deploy him?Offensively he was bleh but he was our only defensemen who wasn't on for a goal against IIRC.
He played physical and didn't make any significant errors on D.
Maybe it is time to bring in Bouch though. Dobson reecntly played 7 minutes on the pp, Bouch is just as ready as he is.

I think it was more luck than anything that he wasn't on for a goal against. There were several shifts in the first period where he and Jones were totally lost in their own zone.
The second PP unit barely exists. It’s a hybrid of the first that plays 15-20 seconds. I just don’t think we’re set up well where Bouchard could really be effective. We need to lock it down. I’m not really worried about our scoring.2nd pp unit?
He isn't just a pp specialist though, he provides ES offense as well.
His style of play is prone to getting hemmed into the defensive zone, but he didn't make any major errors on chances against.
The best defense is a good offense though, so maybe its Bouch time.
We need to lock it down. I’m not really worried about our scoring.
IMO this team will never win anything with Nurse and Larsson playing significant D minutes.
I want to make things easier on Koskinen. Making Conor and Leon’s life easier isn’t a concern right now. I haven’t had a problem with how we’ve played with the puck for the most part. Even tonight with any normal goalie in net we score at least 3 goals. We need to stop bleeding goals against. Why not make it a little easier on Connor and co. by providing them with a guy that can make plays and shoot the puck from the blueline on every pairing?
Ideally they should be a #3 and a #5.
At this point I'm ready to give up significant assets for the best defensemen we can get. If that means trading Broberg/Bouchard, so be it.

Nurse is a #4. A guy who needs someone else to carry the puck on his second pairing so he can focus on defense first.
Larsson is a #6. A guy who needs someone else to carry the puck on his third pairing so he never has to have the puck on his stick.
Having more puck movers doesn’t necessarily mean that. You have to get the puck back from the other team and not get lit up when they have it. I don’t see how Bouchard helps us in the areas we’re struggling in right now. Russell on the other hand does.We can make it easier on him if we are in the other team's zone more often.
His ability to rush the puck up the ice and his physical play along the boards make him a 3 imo. He'd look a lot better if he played lesser minutes.
Paying him 6+ million, though...

Russell gets hemmed in at times for sure but he also doesn’t give up a lot of dangerous chances. Right now we are giving up way too many dangerous chances in our zone. He skated with Barrie a lot in camp I’d like to see that pairing.Russell adds another guy that adds nothing offensively and will get hemmed in his own end.
