So what's our offseason plans? now that it's after the TDL i dunno what else to talk about in here. Pens need to get tougher, go!

Seems to be an interest in discussing plans for the summer and beyond after the deadline shenanigans, so have at it.

Updated the cap numbers at the top of the first post for this summer. The projected $73M ceiling is the liberal estimate from Bettman in December, but that assumes the NHLPA votes to invoke the escalator clause as they have for every offseason since the cap was instituted.

The Pens would have about $14M to play around with this summer if that happens. If not, the ceiling is likely to stay around this year's $69M, in which case that would scale the Pens' spending back to roughly $10M.

It's just meant to be a rough sketch for the sake of discussion. Those numbers, for example, include a roster with Pouliot, but not Harrington (Dumoulin needs a new contract).

Are we going to keep 1 of Martin or Ehrhoff? Top 4 of Letang, Maatta, Lovejoy, Martin/Ehrhoff. Then we can trade off Scuderi closer to NY where he wants to be and use Pouliot with Cole. I would like to get tougher on the back end, what are some realistic options? i would have taken Methot but he has re-signed. Pens have gone from Orpik to Despres to Letang, from Engo to Bort to Cole in less then 1 season. We really are lacking in the toughness department if Letang is our toughest Dman.

I'd love to have Martin back ... on a 1 or 2 year deal. Since I can't imagine that he'd actually agree to that when he can get another five-year term from someone else, I'd be surprised if he's back.

Ehrhoff I want to reserve judgment on until after the playoffs. See how he holds up.

For Bennett to even say that... I just don't even know how to deal at this point.

Ouch. Poor kid. He takes everything in stride, but that's gotta hurt. And now he has to pay double the rent now that his roommate is gone.

Big whoop. Not like he's working at the steak and shake. He should grow up if he feels that way and this is coming from a BB fan.

Can't blame the kid. Look at what some of those idiots post on the pens social media feeds about him. I saw one today, either the pens instagram or twitter, that had an infographic and quote from Bennett about missing Bortuzzo. How he was his roomate and that it sucks to see him and Despres get moved. Some idiot commented "You're next" or "It should have been you" Something to that extent. Back when he was hurt there were people tearing into him too. Just 0 support. If you're BB why wouldn't you want to leave? That's not even considering how the team jerks him around.

He's an athlete for a pro sports team, also an adult, maybe close social media and focus on his career and what makes him happy rather than letting a bunch of morons on the interwebs tear him down and make him feel like crap.

It does concern me that a early to mid 20 yr old has his feelings hurt though. But whatever, Beau is just our sensitive little one.

Gotta think the Pens try and recoup some picks this summer.. I'm hopefully that somehow they can move Sutter/Kunitz for some young players/picks, because I can't imagine they want to only have 3? Picks this year

Yeah, that sounds right. Pretty sure they only have their 2nd, 5th and 6th.

The 1st went for Perron, the 3rd I think was in the Goc deal last season, the 4th went for Winnik, and the 7th was just dealt in the Cole trade.

I might get legit angry if Beau Bennett was traded this summer, I don't feel like the team is railroading him or anything at all, he needs to do more and be more like a Pouliot and less like a Neal/Sykora. The lesson has to be taught and he needs to learn it.

I just wish people would shut the **** up about it.

I think Scuderi could net this team a 3rd and a 4th or a 3rd and 5th at the draft when a team needs a solid 3rd pairing veteran presence on the East Coast. Hopefully...

Or Kunitz, he could return a 2nd at least. I hope.

After a long thought, it is somewhat worrying to me about how this organization treats and develops young players. For example, I was thinkin of the young fleury days. Fleury is a pretty good goalie currently, but when he was first in the league he was hung out to dry by the organization basically forcing him into a #1 starting role at such a young age. He was sorta thrown to the wolves at first; I remember there was some games our team was so bad that fleury had no reason to even be in net but they would leave him in and let teams score 4+ goals on him. Who knows if fleury would have developed a little better and corrected some of his small faults if he was given a better adjustment/development period.

It's starting to look that way with Bennett too. Just let the kid play on a line for a couple weeks at least with the same players and see how he adjusts. Don't try to make beau something he isn't just let the kid find his game and adjust or "tune" it. It's like a guitar, all guitars sound different based on the way they are made but can be tuned to a different sound. Pens sometimes try to reshape the guitar instead of tuning it; it still ends up working in the long run but not the way it was supposed to and sounds a little off.

At some point you gotta let the kids play (and let them play without the worry that one ****up is gonna glue their butts to the bench).

It just sorta worries me when you see the same things happening with player after player. Letang is great don't get me wrong, but he still makes mistakes he has been making since he first entered the big leagues, same with beau (making the same mistakes), same with fleury (the mistakes he makes can be traced back to his days when he first started playing in the league. I have a feeling that happened with despres too (hate the trade but I'm over it). These kids never truely develop with the pens, they just mature but have the same kinks in their armor they did the day they started.

We need to let players develop into their own game not develop players into certain roles which is what the pens try to do at times.

Problem is this organization seems in love with the guys who should be moved to re-stock the draft pick cupboard (Kunitz, Sutter, Scuderi). So I just can't see them moving any of those three, let alone for picks.

I do think Bennett's days are numbered. Unfortunately, with the way he's been used and his overall lack of value around the league, we (the fans) would likely not be happy with the return. I'm guessing they can recoup either their 3rd round pick, or maybe add another 2nd round pick for him.

In the perfect world, Martin and Ehrhoff are allowed to walk, and Sutter, Kunitz, and Scuderi are traded for picks/prospects/upgrades to the current roster. In reality, at best one of Martin or Ehrhoff walks, and Bennett's the one that's dealt.
