Hey so... downloading this right now. Never played before so I expect to be awful. Any tips for a total noob?
In no particular order
1. Don't chase the ball 24/7 in non-solo games.
2. When you're not close to the ball, try not to go where the ball is but where you think it's heading. So if you see someone else closer to the ball and it looks like they'll get to it first, try to guesstimate where the ball will be heading after they hit it and position yourself accordingly.
3. Manage your boost, don't burn it at unnecessary times. When you flip forward (or backwards) you gain speed and can hit sonic speed (or whatever it's called) after you do it a few times in a row. The longer you play the more you'll get accustomed to all the boost pad locations so it will be easier to subconsciously go over them. (and if you don't know, the pads with the small ball over them completely fill your boost bar)
4. Use a controller (if on PC) and change your controller layout. The default layout can definitely be improved upon. I would recommend putting boost on RB/R1, powerslide and air roll on LB/L1, scoreboard on select, and change camera on B/circle. (and voice chat on Y or X)
5. Change your camera settings. Once again the default can be improved upon. Some pro players have posted their settings, or you could just google best rocket league camera settings. You don't have to use any guide exactly the same, you can tweak it to your liking. Though you should probably keep FOV at or near full. Also, turn off camera shake.
6. You'll probably want to have ball-cam on most of the time. There will be times during the game you'll need to switch to free cam, but you'll figure it out the more you play. (or look up youtube vids on the topic)
7. Don't worry about not being an aerial master right away. It takes a lot of people 100+ hours to hit them consistently.
8. Don't always hit the ball as hard as you can. There are times when no one is pressuring you and you can slowly dribble the ball up the field.
9. Don't go after the ball at kickoff if you're furthest away from the ball (right in front of the net).
10. Unless you've been watching people play for a while, you should probably go through the tutorials in-game. It goes over the basics and even the training modes can be useful.
11. Have fun. It's just a game, and some people take it way too seriously and can ruin the experience for others with negativity.
There are tons of very helpful youtube vids with guides and tips for improving. You should check them out if you enjoy the game and want to get into it more.
