I can only give up facts.
-Him and Riopel were invited to Habs rookie camp two years ago. The Habs decided to sign Mayer rather than Riopel which was a questionnable decision.
-Mayer played the 2009-2010 season in the ECHL with Cincinnati. He had an average season but he had a stellar performance during the playoffs and he won the MVP trophee in the playoffs. Habs fan had pretty lost all hopes on him until that playoff performance. However, he had another average season, this time at the AHL level, and we are now wondering if he even is AHL material.
I have to say that in his draft year, I had Mayer as a no-draft player. This guy was way too inconsistent for my liking. The type of inconsistence I just don't believed can be fix. So he wasn't drafted. But I also said that while he didn't deserve to be drafted, he deserved at least an invitation, to which we did.
Now, about this development camp you're talking about. Let me just say, I'm not a goalie specialist. Having said all of that, I can tell you that during this camp, Mayer was MUCH better than Riopel. And while I didn't like Mayer before, I said that if we had to sign one guy after this camp, it HAD to be Mayer. In all honesty, Mayer was showing some great stuff while Riopel looked like he was 3 or 4 years younger than him, one looked almost liked a pro while the other was a junior. The gap was THAT much.
Now this was solely a development camp. See, the kind of development camp that Ryan White looked one of the most awful players in consecutive camps, way worst than players that are either not playing hockey anymore or at the very least will never play in the NHL. But if you go solely on the camp, there was no question whatsoever.
Then, Riopel kept going by braking all the record in the Q while Mayer was.....Mayer. Showing his inconsistency over and over and over again. And going, going, going....Mayer will most likely take the same path than Lacasse did...one contract and then gone.
