I might be in the minority but I would definitely pay a high price to get Risto from the Sabres. Young at 23 which fits our team, three 40+ point seasons, 6'4" 203... and signed.

Many Sabre fans will tell you he can't be traded because he is our best defenseman and we can't afford to lose depth at that position. But there is a case that all of the losing has tainted him and it may be smart to build the defense from scratch. If Botterill really does want to change the culture, perhaps this is the player that needs a change of scenery more than any other. What would you move for him?

OP - Lets trade our best young defender

Canucks would go Joulevi straight up
I'm not so sure about that. Juolevi is doing great. We would need to probably add more up for Risto anyway.

I'm actually wondering. Hutton and Tanev might be available.
Everyone's probably sick of Tanev threads, so I won't ask about him. But what about Hutton? He didn't necessarily have a bad year, but he is somehow in the doghouse, partially because Green won't play him in front of MDZ and Edler, partly because he is having issues with his fitness. But he tends to be a happy dude, and he definitely brings a certain element of fun to the locker room. There were games where he played like our second best Dman, actually a lot of games. Would there be any interest in him? There are reports that he is permanently in Green's doghouse and that he will be traded by the draft/ before camp.

Not for Risto obviously, we'd be adding tons. But there might be a situation where both teams could benefit.

Everything. If we could get an older top 4 defenseman + a good prospect because people see value in his age, good. If we can get a really nice winger, ok. If we can get a top 10 pick and a pretty good roster player, possibly.

Sabres need to build organizational depth and change culture. While trading Risto may be taking one step back, if you get the right deal, it may be the way to take two steps forward down the line. I just think it's worth exploring.

The Isles offer:

Leddy, Ho-Sang and Scott Mayfield for Risto . . .

He's got so many great tools (size, grit, offense) but I really question his defensive IQ/potential.
It's a catch 22. If I thought he had some untapped defensive ability, I'd pay a boatload for him but if Buffalo thought the same, they'd never trade him.

As it stands now, I'd be willing to pay for a #4 PP specialist but I suspect Buffalo will invoice for a top-pairing minute-muncher.

Really, if I had a strong defensive team and wanted to add some snarl and a PP shot, he'd be perfect. What teams come to mind for that?

Nope son this aint my first ring around the Rosie (pocket full of Posies). Here's a Lesson on Negotiating. Offer reduced to Brisaboys and Godlobin.

Maybe you didn't read my response? See below:

I personally like Risto a lot. The Oilers are definitely looking for a RHD PMD so he fits the bill. As stated above by other posters our 1st would definitely be in play. Would Klefbom and a 2018 1st do it?
This is foolish, youre trading Klefbom at his lowest value after an injury riddled season. I mean unless youre predicating a Chia move then absolutely this is so him.

The way Risto likes Swedes, this is not far-fetched, though :D

Hahaha i didnt catch that i must have missed the a XD

The saddest part of this is that if the Sabres are worried about him only knowing how to lose, then other teams probably feel the same way and it could affect the offers that the Sabres get for him.

I think after the last few years where Hall, Eberle, Hainsey, etc guys that have never been in the postseason have moved to new teams and shown thats an old wives tail.

Have they? All three of those guys were moved for lower than what market value would have been if they had successful playoff runs under their belt before they were traded.

my god you dont trade your best dman just because your team sucks. the sabres have a good core they just need to insulate them better with good vets, obviously continuing to build through the draft helps too.

if you trade risto you either sell low on him or start a never ending rebuild trading players you developed for picks just to start all over again.

be patient, there's no reason why the sabres can't be where the leafs are, they have a similar young core group minus goaltending obviously
