Nick Cafardo, the longtime columnist that covered both the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots for the Boston Globe, died suddenly Thursday in Fort Myers, Florida.

He was 62.

According to the Globe, Cafardo was at JetBlue Park, the spring training home of the Red Sox on his day off. "He was apparently stricken by an embolism at the park, and members of the Sox medical team were unable to revive him," the Globe said.

According to an eyewitness, Cafardo was walking down a path when he collapsed and hit his head on a sidewalk.

Cafardo was celebrating his 30th year covering the team for the Boston Globe after beginning his career with the Patriot Ledger.

SportsCenter 5's Mike Lynch called Cafardo "one of the most respected columnists in any city."

"All of us that work in the world of sports and news are very sad right now," Lynch said.
