Not surprised to hear this. He's been having health issues going back to last summer so likely was a factor and wants to take time off to heal.

I wonder if some of this is due to the health reasons of him and his wife? He was a "meh" coach, but had some of the best memes. Bruce B. level of quality memes.

Didn't realise he coached 2600 games, holy smokes!

By all accounts one of the best people in hockey. Enjoy your well deserved retirement Rick!

Best of luck in retirement, Rick.

Wish we could've won that Cup in 2020 but is what it is. Crazy he never won one with such a long career
If you look at his career stats, it's actually quite easy haha.
He has only been the head coach for 8 full seasons, 3 of which were with those awful Senators expansion teams. All of his success as a head coach has been since he took over in 2020.

I'm more shocked that he has spent so much time as an associate and assistant going over 20 years between non-interim head coach jobs.

Pretty good coach and seemed like a really nice guy
Also most games behind the bench as some form of coach ever I think (including with both versions of the Jets!)
Well deserved retirement

Gotta respect his love and commitment but yeesh, 2600 games coached and no cup is rough. Best finish was the SCF with Dallas

My first memory and knowledge of him was being the first coach in Senators history. I thought he was awful. Then over the years, I grew an appreciation for him, not so much as a coach, but moreso a person. As likeable and genuine as they come. Was rooting for him to have won the Cup with the Stars in 2020. Too bad he never hoisted.

Wishing him well in his retirement. Nearly four decades in the NHL is damn impressive, no matter who you are or what position(s) you employed.

Holy f*** I legit had zero knowledge on this guy

I thought he was a 4th or 5th year coach (thought Dallas was his first stint)

Just checking his hockey DB i see he was an assistant/associate coach in 2010s mainly. I only became a big hockey fan from 2010ish so when he wasnt coaching as a head coach

Between 2020 and 2011, he came really close. He was also a key assistant in Tampa but unfortunately left right as the team was coming together.
