The Philadelphia Flyers have signed 6-4, 208-lb defenseman Reece Willcox to an entry-level contract that begins with the 2016-17 season, according to general manager Ron Hextall. Willcox will report to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms on an amateur tryout contract for the remainder of the 2015-16 season.

Willcox, who turned 22 yesterday (3/20/1994), was a fifth-round selection (141st overall) of the Flyers in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft. He recently concluded his senior season at Cornell University, which came to an end with a three-game loss to Quinnipiac in the quarterfinals of the ECAC tournament. Willcox served as one of the team’s captains his senior year while recording two goals and 11 assists for 13 points in 33 games.

Not the RHD we want...but the one we deserve.

:sarcasm:

Glad he signed. Depth is always good. Who knows if he ever becomes anything.

Nice.

He deserves it. Seen only a few games of him the last few years... but every-time I have seen him he has been very solid and has a pretty nice toolset.

Could be a bottom pairing guy down the line... he has the skating and defensive IQ I think to have that in him.

Not bad for a 5th rounder.

The 2012 draft is looking pretty, pretty good with 5 out of the 7 guys signed to ELCs.

20th - Laughton
45th - Stolarz
78th - Ghost
111th - Fredrik Larsson
117th - Leier
141st - Willcox
201st - Valeri Vasiliev

I agree with Appleyard, I have hopes he can put it together to be a bottom pair guy, maybe a 7th dman in our vaunted stable. At worst, a top pair AHL defenseman who won't struggle if called up.

Excited to see him play!

:) As most people know I am happy with this.

The one guy I had to argue with who stated he was a horrible player...well he may not be.

We lost the rights to Larsson, he is struggling after his injuries.

Yeah, he has been struggling with injuries basically since we drafted him, there was some illnes also I believe. Injuries has been continuing this season as well - but he has played more in 2016 and he has been solid defensively when he has played. (In the Swedish 3rd Tier)

Dope, always good to see lower draft guys nab themselves contracts. Hopefully he can keep his progression going and provide some depth down the line

It's only for two years per TimmyP. Willcox just turned 22 so that makes sense.

According to Article 9.1 of the CBA, players who sign their first SPC between the ages of 18 and 21 are bound to a three-year contract. Players who sign their first SPC between the ages of 22 and 23 sign two-year contracts, while players who sign at the age of 24 sign one-year contracts. Players age 25 and older are not bound to the entry-level system and therefore have no limits on the years or compensation amounts.

According to Article 9.2 of the CBA, the age of the player is defined as the player's age on September 15 of the calendar year in which he signs an SPC, regardless of his actual age on the date he signs such SPC.

Signing him a day after he turns 22 so he gets a two year ELC rather than three year. That's cold.

Edit: Ah, it's age at September 15 in the signing year. Nevermind then.
