I really do understand the BPA philosophy, but unless we have a couple of high end scorers on the roster in 2 years we will look little different from today, even with Lidstrom on the roster.

That's right. In a vacuum, I'm really okay with this pick. But we're not in a vacuum. Chayka had better come up with some short and long-term scoring solutions very quickly. If he does that, I'll celebrate this pick.

If he doesn't, his head goes on a GOT spike. (metaphorically speaking I need to add in these times.)

AZ draft preferences:
1) preference at C or D
2) high hockey IQ
3) skating
4) compete level / work ethic
5) coachability

What am I missing? Do you agree with my ranking?

I’d say the whole late birth month thing kinda flew out the window this draft.

Agreed. I had pinned it on Chayka but maybe it was Bernhardt.

Or maybe Chayka changed strategy if the rest of the league caught on to the old one. I work in capital markets and I see everyone trying to find and exploit market inefficiencies. The trick that worked last year might be played out and you have to find a new one.

The top 17 players in the draft were all born in the first half of 2001.

Is that weird?

I think the late birth month is an added bonus to Chayka. If he has two players rated fairly equally the younger one gets the nod. @lanky may be right that others are catching on or Chayka doesn't want to show his cards so he mixed it up. I think there is too much correlation to say it isn't a factor in his decision making though.

I was thinking for the sport in general. How is the kids hockey organized, is the delimiter birthday vs calender years?
As you come up through youth hockey it’s birthyear. So January is the beginning. But for the nhl draft, January is the middle. So if you draft late birthdays, you’re getting kids that haven’t had the benefit of the extra development year. You can look at that as a positive or negative. Most people think it shows the prospect has more room to grow.
