I remember watching this one with my mom. Was so disappointed they didn't get the job done in game 5 but that gave them a chance to silence the Maple Leaf crowd.

I'm glad their airing this but the quality is just hard to watch, every camera motion is so blurry. Doesn't help that the Air Canada Center is brightly lit, very hard on the eyes.

Yeah there's definitely been a few games in this retro series where it's been exceptionally noticeable just how bad puck tracking was in this brighter arenas from years back.

I will say it was amusing driving back from college for this series, felt like the entire way down there was a pack of cars, us with NC plates and Canes flags and a few Ontario tag cars, all headed for the same place. Trying to remember where I stopped for lunch on the way down (Beckley?) but it was actually fun talking with a few of those guys that also stopped. Of course I made sure to put on my jersey when I stopped and for the rest of the trip down lest there be any doubt.

Bret Hedican w/ a black eye too? I remember O'Neill getting his in game 3 and then scoring the OT winner.

On a similar note, I remember how excited the city of Raleigh was for this run. I had never really seen pride in one sports team before like that. The One Team One Dream banners on businesses throughout town, the Canes jerseys on the statues near the Capital Building, the flags on the cars. It was f***ing cool, and even cooler that it was for a Hockey team, in North Carolina, Basketball and NASCAR country.

Charlotte had a mural on one of their Uptown buildings for the Hornets that originally had Mourning and Larry Johnson and Hugo on it, but Mourning left shortly after as did Johnson and the mural got changed every so often but it had become kind of a laughingstock that no one wanted it around anymore. Panthers had one too in 1996-97 for their NFCCG run but it also quickly became a joke.

I had forgotten just how good Joseph was in this game. Canes played an absolutely perfect playoff game, absolutely beat Toronto’s ass, should have won 5-0. Joseph was the difference and deserved a better fate.

Also, how stupid were Sundin and Kaberle for all but that one play in the third period? Like FFS, those guys must have had money on Carolina.

Gary Roberts created that tying goal almost single handed. The announcers focused on his crosschecking Hill in the face to keep the rebound alive, but they missed what really generated the opportunity — O’Neill drifted way down low, and was just going back up high to cover Kaberle when Roberts crosschecked him completely to the ice. That’s how you get Kaberle dancing around with the puck while Francis awkwardly goes out to cover him. O’Neill was still down near the crease recovering from that interference by Roberts. Which is a great play in a situation where the ref is absolutely not going to call it.
