I don't mind it at all, good on the PK when healthy. Now as long as they let Helm walk since they signed Miller, as to not tie up too much money in aging veterans.

If he's buried, only 75K will be counted against the cap. (1.025M one-year contract)

Summary Table for Calculation Purposes:

[Season]: [Minimum Salary] + $375,000 = Total that can be buried
2015-16: $575,000 + $375,000 = $950,000
2016-17: $575,000 + $375,000 = $950,000
2017-18: $650,000 + $375,000 = $1,025,000
2018-19: $650,000 + $375,000 = $1,025,000
2019-20: $700,000 + $375,000 = $1,075,000
2020-21: $700,000 + $375,000 = $1,075,000
2021-22: $750,000 + $375,000 = $1,125,000

This was pretty obvious when it was rumored they offered him n helm a deal. Was anyone actually wondering if he'd sign it?

I always liked Drew but honestly I forgot about him after his injuries of late, thought we could probably give a younger guy permanent time on the bottom and PK. I guess the money is whatever though.

The Wings still had Helm and Datsyuk in the lineup, and Andy later on. All those guys are gone. AA should be learning to play against bigger dogs and Larkin should be learning to center, not wasting valuable energy as a PK anchor. They can still get PK experience when guys like Shea/Glen/Abby are in the box.

That is fair, I wouldn't want Larkin wasting energy on the PK as much right now either. Who knows how the opening night roster is going to look at this point either, but it makes sense to bring him back if Helm is gone for sure. Miller when healthy has been great on the PK

Maybe the timing of this deal is evidence that the offers Helm has gotten are way out of Holland's price range.

Makes sense. With the injury they could keep him so low that the entire contract can get buried if needed. Not that I don't expect a fully healthy Miller to not play on the 4th line and kill penalties.

Now we watch as hfboards freaks out over a spare forward.

Drew is fine as #13-14.

The problem is that he isn't deployed as a #13-14 in Detroit. That's why this is a problem. Also, what teams give a #13-14 forward 1 million? If you're signing a guy designed to be your extra forward, wouldn't you try to keep his contract under the buried money threshold?

He is definitely fine as an extra forward, the spot he was brought in to be 5 years ago. It's been years since Miller has been that guy, though. He's been stapled into the 4th line winger role since Lidstrom retired I think.

The problem is that Detroit is back to having a million extra players and not a million extra spots.
