Having the best goalie in the world from 24-30 would be pretty nice...

I don't think we pick him, though I am not certain he is dropping down a lot of teams boards that badly. We will see, but an Askarov or Drysdale for me points for a longer three year sort of plan by Yzerman, especially Askarov to me would just signal yes they were sky high on him as a Vezina kind of goalie and they know they have a couple more years of pain so his development pattern while they gain a couple more high draft picks before trying to explode upwards is fine with their timeline.

We will see, but I would rather have him than Rossi and that guy seems to have lots of fans. Goalies are risky, I get it, but the idea this kid isn't a big time starter, kind of like with Knight just seems so low, I am willing to buy on the decade of control for elite in net. Vasy and Gibson are not bad players to have, we have a lot to build out, goalie is one of those spots. We can go free agency, but I am not going to kill the move and Yzerman is the kind of guy that would do it without blinking if that is what they think is best on their turn.
Fleury went first overall in 2003 and won the cup 6 years later and continues to be a top 5 goalie in the league. If he has Askarov in that 4-10 tier I think Yzerman would value the goalie way higher than a wing or Drysdale and we saw what he did with Seider. Wouldn't surprise me if he builds from the back out.

There's only four or five players on the wings that will be here when we're competitive so there's no rush. He always preaches patience

I guess, if the team wont be ready to do anything for a while anyway, then they could consider trading away more talent for an extra first-round pick. Especially since, with this coronoavirus thing, we might not get much use out of whatever player that is anyway.

With an extra first-round pick, then taking Askarov, seems a lot better.

Why they weren't using extra third or second-round picks to go after goalies already, I have no idea. Seems like there were drafts when they had three third-rounders but didn't want to gamble one on a goalie. Which seems a little crazy, when after all, the team has had good luck in the past when they drafted goalies a little sooner than they have been.

In the last 20 years, how many NHL franchises have done a worse job than Detroit at drafting and developing goalies?
It's also strange how many of the goalies recently signed to GR have not performed as expected. I mean Säteri, Rybar, Pickard and maybe even Machovsky should all have been pretty good AHL goalies, but did not perform as expected IMO. Especially Säteri, that was a big surprise.

Makes you think how bad are all the other organizations.

Hire Goaltending coach Mitch Korn, and everything will turn around. Guy did work with Hasek at Buffalo at 90's. Then at Nashville for over a decade (Rinne his best product) then at Washington for 2014 to 2018, and now he is at NY Islanders with Trotz. And have seen what currently happens there for reclamation projects like Lehner and Greiss.

Sign him with Lambert at any cost and rest is history.

Where Mitch Korn is, there is the best goaltending.

Because drafting goalies is a complete crapshoot. Some of the best junior goalies turned into nothing and some of the less hyped goalies did extremely well. This is why I don't like drafting goalies anywhere in the first 2 rounds. Just take a look at Visentin, Subban, Campbell, Fucale, McDonald, Pickard, McCollum, Gistedt.

Yes there are some great goalies that were drafted in the 2nd round, but goalie development is so much harder and unpredictable. Better to look at UFA's and/or draft in the later rounds and hope you get lucky.

Your stats show how overrated games played can be. Howard has played TOO many games for this franchise. Should have canned him many years back. Mrazek's list of games played includes time for other franchises. Bottom line is that neither Howard nor Mrazek have ever been anything but an average goalie for this team. They also happen to be the only goalies drafted by this franchise that I can remember even playing significant time with Detroit in the last 20 years.
