Rebuilding the rebuilding Sabres

Premise: this is the 3rd one I’ve done, as I started this after the latest roster update. So Power is part of the Sabres, along with other top prospects on their teams.

September 13, 2021: In a surprising turn of events, Sabres GM Kevyn Adams has stepped away from his role and moved up to become the Sabres President of Hockey Operations. To replace his now departed role, he has tabbed Markus Ketterer as the teams new GM. “I felt it was time to fully put the plan for the Sabres into place,” said Adams. “We know what type of team we want. A team that the fans of Buffalo can be proud of. A fast, hardworking team loaded with skill. Markus has performed admirably in his scouting for talent, so I felt he deserved a bigger piece of the pie. I am confident that pairing him with our analytics department, the Sabres will be a force soon.”

“I will use the pre-season to evaluate the players on our NHL team,” said Ketterer. “Nobody on our team is off-limits, and I expect every player to give 110% every game, pre-season included. There will be no floating at any times. I know Buffalo hockey, and know what the fans expectations are. It’s shape up or ship out, starting now.”

After a pre-season where the team finished 6-1-1, the team starts the 2021-22 season in high spirits. They open the season with a win against the Montreal Canadiens, and during the game, GM Ketterer wasted no time putting his stamp on the team by making a minor trade with the Avalanche.

“The Sabres have traded Cody Eakin (80 TWF) exchange for Nico Sturm (78 TWF). We have retained 50% of Eakin’s salary, both to help Colorado and ourselves stay above the cap floor. We are excited to add Sturm to our young core, and he’s looking forward to the challenge of being Rochester’s 1C this upcoming season.”

From there until the new year, the Sabres battled up and down the Atlantic division, giving many players their first shots at the NHL due to injuries and ending the 2021 portion in 5th place, 1 point back of a wild card berth.

As the calendar rolls over to 2022, the Sabres make a very minor trade. They ship C Andrew Oglevie (70 TWF) to Boston for a 2023 7th. GM Ketterer had this to say about the trade “Andrew was buried on the depth chart in Rochester and hasn’t played a game for them. We were finally able to find a team with room to acquire him and will give him playing time. I wish him the best of luck for Providence.”

The Sabres take care of some minor business throughout January, expanding food options and re-signing Olofsson (83 SNP), Sturm (79 TWF), Bryson (76 TWD) and Luukkonen (80 HYB). The extensions break down as:

Olofsson = 4 x $4.6M
Sturm = 4 x $1.55M
Bryson = 1 x $1M
Luukkonen = 2 x $3M

The team gets healthy for the first time all season, and by Valentine’s Day, GM Ketterer decides to show the league and Sabres very little love. He makes 4 trades in one day and one free agent signing, completely overhauling the team in one fell swoop. 16 players change teams in total.

The first trade was with the Minnesota Wild. Gone to the Wild were D Mark Pysyk (80 TWD) and LW Drake Cagguila (80 TWF). Heading to Buffalo were D Jacob Middleton (78 DFD) and C Noah Stevens (76 TWF).

The next trade was with Chicago. Gone to the Windy City was G Craig Anderson (80 HYB) and D prospect Miska Kukkonen (58 DFD). Going back to Buffalo was DFD Alex Vlasic (77 rating).

To fill the gap of trading a goalie, the teams signed FA Artyom Zagidulin (75 HYB) to a one year, $925K contract.

Their next trade involved a swap of minor league goalies with the Anaheim Ducks. Malcolm Subban (79 HYB) goes to Orange County, and Olle Eriksson-Ek (71 HYB) goes to Erie County. Both players then get re-assigned to the AHL affiliates.

The day’s final trade involves Vegas, which is the teams second trade since the summer (Eichel trade in this instance and for the purposes of this game, even though that trade didn’t happen then in reality). Heading to Sin City are G Dustin Tokarski (78 HYB), D Will Butcher (80 OFD 50% retained), LW prospect Isak Rosen (70 SNP), and C John Hayden (75 TWF).

Going back to Buffalo are G Logan Thompson (76 HYB who grows to 78 upon his arrival), LW Pavel Dorofeyev (77 SNP) and D Zach Whitecloud (80 TWD).

All players get a week and a half to integrate themselves with the team, and both goalies win their Sabre debuts (5-0 over St. Louis, 6-1 over Dallas) and the team goes on a heater. By mid-March the team sits in 5th place in the Atlantic, 8th in the conference and 5 points (shockingly) up on the Toronto Maple Leafs.

They make one minor acquisition, picking up D Mark Stone (79 TWD) off waivers from Calgary and assign him to Rochester.

For a re-building team to be in contention for the playoffs at this point in the season is shocking. The fans are coming back in droves, shocking everybody around the league. It’s the home stretch of the season, so now to see if the Sabres can pull off what was deemed unthinkable at the start of the season, which is make the playoffs.

During the trade deadline, Buffalo decides to add to the team to make a playoff push. First they claim D Jakub Zboril (76 TWD) off waivers from Boston, then send him back for a 2022 7th.

The teams next move was shipping out LW Viljami Marjala (57 TWF) to the Sharks for LW/D Yevgeniy Kashnikov (57 TWD).

They then swiveled south and made a trade with the surprising Anaheim Ducks, trading C/RW Vinnie Hinostroza (76 TWF), 2023 2nd (BUF), and a 2024 3rd (BUF) for C/RW Jacob Perreault (80 TWF). With Tuch’s long term injury, he immediately slots into the open 1st line spot on RW, keeping the other lines together.

To bolster the D corps, the Sabres head North a bit and make a trade with the Kings. Heading west are D Jacob Middleton (77 DFD) and a 2022 3rd (BUF) for D Olli Maatta (82 TWD) and C Samuel Helenius (70 PWF).

The Sabres gain 5/6 points after the deadline, and appear to be headed for the playoffs for the first time in a decade, sitting 5 points up on Tampa Bay for the 1st wild card spot, and 9 points up on the Rangers for the (at worst) last wild card position.

Update: I snuck into the playoffs as the last wild card team. Then proceeded to take out the Habs in 6 (they won the President’s Trophy), Panthers in 4, Tampa Bay in 5, and St. Louis in 4.

This is while running a goalie tandem of Thompson (76 HYB) and Zagidulin (75 HYB), because this game makes no sense at all

The simming seems to get more random every year it doesn't play anything like it would if you had watched the game with the ai playing.

It was so random. I was trying to tank and instead win the Cup. Literally I was just making trades so I got equal value back and then boom! Cup winners.

It’s not like I was running a “contender” team, seeing I was still a seller at the TDL.

Everytime I try to rebuild a team through the draft, or straight up tank by fielding a roster of high 70's rated players I end up going deep in the playoffs.

Whenever I have a really solid contender I always seem to miss the post season or get swept in round 1 by some garbage wildcard team.

You summed it up perfectly. Game makes no sense.

I originally had a plan for a Sabres team I wanted for the 2022-23 season, using an idea I had for free agents that were available this year, to somewhat see how they’d do.

Apparently the throwaway year that was the 2021-22 season now made my owner want another Cup

Stupid game

I don't think i've ever missed the postseason when i get a team stacked but damn do I get swept by a team in the 1st round that shouldn't even be there one time I simmed 3 games against the same team in the next playoff run and my team got down 0-3 then I let the games play out in an AI vs AI game and my team reverse swept them scoring like 8-10 goals in 3 of those games because that's how I would expect that matchup to go its as if the sim engine is terrible beyond belief I don't know how it calculates anything.

How’s mittelstadt progress?
I traded him to my Bruins team and have him in 2nd line C with Hall/DeBrusk

Only about 30 games in but he’s 3rd in team scoring

He grew to be an 82, but didn’t do that well scoring wise. He put up .5 a game, but in his defence I kept him stapled to the 3rd line (with Krebs and Hinostroza or Okposo) for the entirety of the season, even with injuries.

Thompson constantly got injured, so his 1C spot kept being filled by call-ups and rookies (even dmen) to keep the lines together.

I tried to keep the Sabres lines together if possible, and any trades I cycled players through the 4th line or 3rd pairing if feasible. Given it was supposed to be a development year for the original plan I had for the 2022-23 season, I thought that was the best option to try and boost as many chemistry options.

Apparently I succeeded too well

Next up is the NHL Draft and the re-sign and free agency phases. It ends up being a killer few weeks for the Sabres.

MarkusKetterer

Shoulda got one game in
After the excitement of an improbable Stanley Cup victory for the Buffalo Sabres, the team entered the off-season with nearly $50 million in cap space entering free agency. In addition to that, the team had 12 draft picks, with the team hoping to stockpile more high end prospects for the future. The rest of the NHL was watching with anticipation along with Sabres fans. What would a team do when they're in a position never seen before in league history?

First on the docket was the 2022 NHL Draft. The Sabres had 3 first round picks due to trades they had made (18th OA from Florida, 24th OA from Vegas) and their own pick (32nd OA). GM Ketterer had acknowledged that centre and defenceman depth was an area of concern, and targeted that with the Sabres draft picks. On the day of the draft, the Sabres caused plenty of excitement by making two trades. Their first trade was to move Jacob Perrault to Nashville for their 2022 1st, which was 21st overall. Their second trade was to swap spots with the Arizona Coyotes, trading up to 30th OA in exchange for the 32nd overall and minor goalie prospect Mikhail Berdin (71 HYB). With the team's eye for talent, they selected the following in the 2022 draft):

118L. BichselLD67 TWDTop 4 D
121B. McConnell-BarkerC63 TWFTop 6 F
124M. LamoureuxRD62 TWDTop 2 D
130N. GaucherC60 PWFX-FactorFranchise

7-198-A. Engstrom-D-58 OFD-Top 6 D
7-224-V. Kravchenko-RW-55 TWF-Bottom 6 F

After a solid draft that looks to set the Sabres up for long term success, the team became the talk of the NHL. What would GM Ketterer do in free agency? Would the team spend, or would they continue their rebuild? The city of Buffalo and the entire NHL would soon receive their answer, with free agency only a week and a half away.

Before that happens, the team had their own business to take care of. They have their own RFAs to deal with and prospects without contracts. They doled out the following contracts:

06/25/2022: D L. Bichsel (67 TWD) 3/$900,000
06/25/2022: LW J. Bloom (61 SNP) 3/$860,000
06/25/2022: LW W. von Barnekow-Lofberg (64 TWF) 3/$875,000
06/25/2022: RW O. Nadeau (66 TWF) 3/$825,000
06/26/2022: C A. Ruotsalainen (76 SNP) 2/$875,000
06/30/2022: LW B. Murray (76 PWF) 1/$850,000

After an improbable Stanley Cup win, and after the 2022 NHL Draft, the NHL entered the 2022 free agency period. The Sabres entered it with nearly $50 million in cap space, and many teams were up against the cap. The entire NHL was wondering where the team goes from there. How busy would they be? What EXACTLY was the Sabres plan? Those were the questions on the minds of the citizens of Buffalo, and the rest of the NHL. The answer that everyone got was not what was expected with so many big names available. The Sabres targeted depth.

07/04/2022: D D. Farrance (77 TWD) 1/$875,000
07/04/2022: G J. Bednar (76 HYB) 3/$950,000
07/04/2022: C J. Leschyshyn (76 TWF) 2/$850,000
07/04/2022: C N. Paul (79 TWF) 5/$1.800,000

This was a surprising turn of events. The team was in a place to shock the NHL, and instead they add minor pieces. The city of Buffalo began to grumble, and many people were wondering if GM Ketterer was in over his head. Those mumbles became louder and louder the further into free agency it went. Especially after GM Ketterer made some trades that gave the team even more cap space.

07/06/2022: To ARI - RW K. Okposo (82 PWF)
To BUF: D J. Leidekker (61 DFD), ARI 2024 4th

07/06/2022: To ANA: C Z. Girgensons (79 TWF)
To BUF: RW S. Pastujov (67 SNP), C T. Ronni (58 TWF)

07/06/2022: To DET: G L. Thompson (78 HYB)
To BUF: D W. Newpower (74 TWD)

07/06/2022: To CHI: D A. Vlasic (77 DFD), LW A. Bjork (77 TWF), COL 2023 7th
To BUF: C S. Petrovsky (67 TWF)

07/06/2022: To CAR: RW P. Dorofeyev (75 SNP)
To BUF: DET 2023 5th

Surely this meant the team was ready to spend. They now had even more cap space. Now they can go reel in the big fish of free agency. The NHL waited to see what happens in the city of Buffalo. Who would they land? And then the city receives their answer, and the fans are not happy. The teams targets more depth.

07/09/2022: D T. Reunanen (77 TWD) 1/$925,000
07/09/2022: C V. Lettieri (77 SNP) 1/$900,000
07/09/2022: G J. Blomqvist (72 HYB) 3/$925,000
07/12/2022: G J. Korpisalo (80 HYB) 1/$800,000
07/14/2022 C S. Lorentz (77 TWF) 1/$800,000
07/18/2022: D C. Jones (80 TWD) 2/$2,200,000

It becomes clear what GM Ketterer's plan is. He wants depth across the organization. He wants it that in the event of injuries, both the Sabres and Rochester Americans will not lose depth. Rochester fans are happy, but the city of Buffalo is not. The owners have said they are willing to spend, and so far all they have spent money on is improving the arena. Despite the recent Cup win, fans are demanding that Ketterer gets fired. And then GM Ketterer shocks the NHL and Buffalo by making an overnight trade with the St. Louis Blues for a disgruntled top line forward.

07/22/2022: To BUF: RW J. Kyrou (86 PLY), G E. Gascon (61 HYB)
To STL: D W. Newpower (74 TWD), BUF 2023 7th

The fans wake up to the news excited. Maybe the owner will spend after all, forgetting that there is a minimum amount the owner has to spend. It becomes the only thing they talk about all morning. And then while the city of Buffalo is enjoying lunch, they get even more good news. The Sabres have spent some money!

07/22/2022: LW A. Burakovsky (83 SNP) 1/$2,850,000
07/22/2022: G J. Campbell (85 HYB) 5/$5,500,000
07/22/2022: recent draft pick D U. Jacobsen (49 TWD) 3/$900,000
07/22/2022: RW R. Bezeau (59 TWF) 3/$775,000
07/22/2022: C E. Soderblom (60 TWF) 3/$800,000

The fans are happy. The Sabres have spent some money. They land the biggest available goalie and two of the top wingers available. All it cost the team was some money and a prospect defenceman that wasn't in the team's plans. And then the team goes ahead and makes a trade with the New York Islanders, shoring up the teams defence corps.

07/23/2022: To BUF: D S. Mayfield 81 DFD)
to NYI: VGK 2023 2nd

As the calendar rolls over into August, the Sabres send the city of Buffalo and the entire NHL buzzing. The team spends even more money and signs two of the biggest still available free agents. The team becomes one of the deepest looking teams in the NHL in one day. A team that looks like it has serious plans to defend its Cup title.

08/01/2022: D K. Letang (89 TWD) 1/$9,200,000
08/01/2022: C V. Trocheck (85 TWF) 5/$6,100,000

The NHL is reeling. The Sabres odds to repeat as Cup champions rise, and they become 3-1 odds to repeat, trailing only the Tampa Bay Lightning who have 2-1 odds. GM Ketterer sees this, and decides he wants to jump over Tampa. After discussions all summer, he makes the Sabres the entire talk of the NHL by landing the biggest free agent available, and drives the city of Buffalo into a frenzy.

08/10/2022: C P. Bergeron (92 TWF) 2/$8,450,000

Did the seeies die at this point?

Yea. I was beating up on the league so I got bored with it, then moved on to NHL 23 when it became really cheap. The only thing I remember is that both Bergeron and Trocheck complained about ice time (twice for Trocheck), so I traded Trocheck to Detroit for a couple of prospects. And Campbell lost his starter job.

Now I’m just waiting for NHL 23 to update their rosters with college signings, so hopefully that’s soon.

After the last update (April 20th) I have started a new sim because finally I have Devon Levi as a prospect. Unfortunately it means all of the post deadline deals are in place, so for realism I will not play Tyson Jost, Jordan Greenway or Riley Stillman (save for a game here and there to keep them “happy” while they’re scratched) until their acquisition date. So Jost cannot really play full time until November 19, and Greenway and Stillman can’t play until the TDL.

I have already signed D prospect Andrew Perrott (68 DFD) to a one year ELC and traded D Jacob Bryson to the Islanders for a 2023 6th round pick on the same day. So basically a pick + prospect for someone I had on the trade block and had sent to the AHL.

Fog of war is off, trades are on easy (otherwise I have to overpay), injuries are on so hopefully I don’t suffer a ton of them, because that gets annoying having to constantly edit lines, and hopefully the coach stops putting Dahlin and Jokiharju together every single day.

You summed it up perfectly. Game makes no sense.
If you want to tank, fire your head coach (or just demote them to the AHL) and hire the worst coach available or even just promote your goalie coach to HC. You’ll finish last every time.

Chemistry and coaching matter more than skill and goalie skill is almost totally irrelevant.

@MarkusKetterer stupid question, but is the simming still broken? (if your restarting the series)

I attempted a test run with Washington. Fantasy draft, and mostly low overall players - under .500 halfway through the season.

What’s interesting about it though, (if you were to painstakingly do a CPU vs CPU watchalong) I feel like the game simmed properly. Lost 10 games in a row with high scores like 6-0, 7-2, etc.. but nobody really has that much patience and time to attempt that

So far it seems to be relatively (score and record-wise) normal, other than injuries, and the game really not liking Thompson. So far there seems to be not much difference between the 91 rated Thompson and 79 rated Hinostroza sim-wise. It is annoying having half my team injured, then my call-ups getting injured. Completely threw out my attempted realism by the start of November 2022, so I had to restart once again

So I finally completed a year in NHL23, and I had to go for it at the TDL to finally break the futility streak of the Sabres.

Throughout the first four months of the season, the Sabres were streaky. Win 4 games in a row, followed by 6 straight losses, followed by minor winning and losing streaks (2/3) to put the team outside of the playoff bubble, saved from being last in the division only by Montreal being worse. The injury bug had a huge hate for the Sabres, as the only person that managed to stay healthy was 41 year old Craig “Methuselah” Anderson.

In February of 2023, the Sabres started to put it together and went 7-2-1 to rocket up the division standings, being in 3rd place and in the second wild card position. A hard fought March 1st win over the division leading Bruins changed the owners goals from sellers to cautious buyers, and GM Markus Ketterer was allowed to go shopping for a playoff push, and diversified the prospect pool while doing so.

The Sabres first took care of the system on March 3, making 6 AHL deals, 3 with teams on the Pacific coast.

Seattle GM Ron Francis called the Sabres about acquiring the rights to LW/C Arttu Ruotsalainen (77 TWF) while the Sabres had interest in Seattle prospect LW Jani Nyman (72 PWF). Buffalo threw in their 2023 7th rounder to make the deal happen.

Next, GM Ketterer called the Sharks to enquire about the teams plans for D Henry Thrun (77 TWD) and C Theo Jacobsson (59 TWF). While high on Thrun, the Sharks wanted someone more NHL ready and were willing to deal him for that. Both Shark players moved to Buffalo, with the Sabres sending D Jacob Bryson (79 TWD) and a 2025 7th rounder to San Jose.

Wanting to add some size and grit to the pool, Ketterer called Rob Blake in the city of angels to enquire about a couple of skyscrapers in the Kings system. The Kings wanted to add some speed and a goalie prospect to their system. A deal was struck to send C Samuel Helenius (70 TWF) and C Kaleb Lawrence (61 GRN) to the Sabres for LW Brandon Biro (71 PLY) and G Tobias Leinonen (64 HYB).

Heading back east, the Sabres had a stopover in St. Louis, and the team left with RW Simon Robertsson (69 PWF) in tow, while leaving LW/C Viljami Marjala (61 TWF) behind.

The Sabres then hit the Big Apple and picked up D Brandon Scanlin (67 DFD) from the Rangers and RW William Dufour (75 PWF) from the Islanders. In return the Rangers received RW/C Vinnie Hinostroza (77 TWF) & a 2024 7th round pick, while the Isles received D Kale Clague (79 TWD).

The prospect pool now diversified, GM Ketterer turned his attention to the Sabres, making deals which caused a lot of displeasure with the Buffalo fanbase.

Shoulda got one game in
On Trade Deadline Day, the Sabres targeted an upgrade in goal, defensive depth, grit, and looked for more veteran leadership. Amidst all of the chaos, the Sabres shipped out their captain.

The first move was to target the bottom 6, and the Sabres and Ottawa Senators engaged in trade talks. The target was a player the Senators soured on, and C Mark Kastelic (75 PWF) became a Sabre to improve the PK. Going to the capital of Canada was a member of the Czech mafia in LW Jakub Konecny (62 PLY) & Buffalo’s 2023 6th rounder.

Ketterer then called Columbus GM Jarmo Kekalainen to enquire about the availability of D Andrew Peeke (81 DFD). Columbus was willing to move him for the right price, and a deal was struck to send Peeke to Buffalo for D Austin Strand (72 DFD) and Buffalo’s 2024 2nd round pick.

Next up the Sabres and Lightning engaged in trade talks, with the Sabres acquiring 3 time Cup champion D Brent Seabrook (70 TWD) to lead the D-corps. Heading the other way was prospect LW Gustav Karlsson (63 SNP).

In a day that had Parayko, Kuznetsov, Tom Wilson and Brayden Schenn all move, the Sabres and Coyotes made the most shocking trade of the day right before the deadline. The Sabres shipped out their captain RW Kyle Okposo (82 PWF) @50% retained, G Eric Comrie (80 HYB) and Buffalo’s 2023 2nd round pick to the desert for G Karel Vejmelka (84 HYB) and C Bryan Little (70 TWF).

Before the dust of the day settled, the Sabres upgraded their defensive depth for free, claiming D Jack Rathbone (79 TWD) and D Robin Salo (78 TWD) off waivers from the Canucks and Islanders.

In the next 21 games, the Sabres took 28 out of a possible 42 points to catapult themselves up the standings. They finished with 92 points, breaking their playoff drought by getting the first wildcard spot, finishing ahead of their rival the Toronto Maple Leafs and a date with the Lightning in the first round.

Shoulda got one game in
After an improbable end of the season run to snap a playoff drought, the Sabres faced the Tampa Bay Lightning in the 1st round of the playoffs. Despite a valiant effort, the Sabres were eliminated in 5 games by the proven Lightning. In spite of that, it was a successful season for the team. They watched the Carolina Hurricane's win the Stanley Cup over the Dallas Stars, and GM Ketterer was aiming to bring that to the city. Before that could happen, there was the NHL Draft and free agency to take care of before the next season.

With all of the Sabres young skill and speed, Ketterer decided to concentrate of defensive depth and grit to surround his young team at the draft.

In the re-sign phase, the Sabres were quiet, with the team only re-signing C L. Rousek (74 SNP), LW B. Murray (77 PWF) and D A. Perrott (71 DFD) to one year contracts. They also signed unsigned forward prospects LW/RW W. von Barnekow (75 TWF) and RW S. Robertsson (71 SNP) to 3 year entry level contracts.

On the first day of free agency, Ketterer swung a trade with the Anaheim Ducks, sending V. Olofsson (83 SNP) west for D prospects J. Lacombe (78 TWD) and N. Warren (67 DFD).

The first dominos fell on 07/04/23, with the Sabres signing the following restricted free agents: D A. Andersson (77 DFD), G C. Lindbom (75 HYB) and C M. McLeod (80 TWF). The first two were depth for Rochester, and the latter was pencilled in as the Sabres 4th line centre.

Liking the idea of centre depth, the following day the Sabres signed the biggest free agent, landing C P. Bergeron (90 TWF) to a one year, $8M contract. The veteran was brought in for his leadership and teaching ability, with the hopes that having him will allow the Sabres young centre corps to get better at faceoffs.

The next day, Ketterer looked west again and made a trade with the Arizona Coyotes. They acquired D S. Weber (70 TWD) in exchange for recently drafted C prospect A. Malkin (52 PLY). Weber was assigned to Rochester to help teach the young Sabres prospects.

On 07/08/23, the Sabres signed C V. Filppula (76 PLY), luring him back to North America from Liiga, and assigned him to Rochester to teach their prospects.

On 07/09/23, the Sabres swung two trades. First up was with the Winnipeg Jets, sending LW/C Z. Girgensons to Manitoba for 3 prospects: C C. Pitre (60 SNP), RW F. Wagner (64 PLY), and LW R. Bochenski (60 TWF). Next they traded D with Nashville, sending D J. Rathbone (79 TWD) in exchange for D J. Matier (68 TWD).

On 07/12/23, the Sabres signed restricted free agent LW/C P. Kurashev (81 PLY) to a one year contract worth $1.45M.

On 07/13/23, Ketterer decided to weaken an Atlantic division opponent further, signed C D. Krejci (85 PLY) to a one year, $4.725M contract.

With the NHL team taken care of, Ketterer decided to target more defensive depth. On 07/19/23, he signed D D. Samberg (78 TWD) and D N. Meloche (79 TWD) to identical one year, $875K contracts.

During training camp, Ketterer made one more trade to free up a contract spot. Seeing he was pushed out over the summer, D B. Scanlin (67 DFD) was traded to Toronto for prospect C P. Vesterhelm (56 PLY).

Entering the season, the Sabres look like Cup contenders.
