I find this absolutely amusing....

Is there any way to search all groups??? I'd be interested in reading political debates from the 80's.

Not that I know of. You can try just typing in "political debate" and switch the dates, but not sure how many results you'll get.

This is absolutely fascinating. Props to the OP for sharing.

It's cool to look back and see what they were saying about different things. Now think about kids stumbling across their parents' facebooks 30-40 years down the road!

I just noticed you can "reply to author"

Imagine some dude getting an email in his inbox with someone replying to one of his messages from 1991? I doubt the person would actually receive it though.

Anyways, here's another Eric Lindros discussion from February of 1991. Remember to scroll up and click "expand all" to read everything.

http://groups.google.com/group/rec....5f4e029ee4585?q=eric+lindros#7895f4e029ee4585

Well, I guess you couldn't see the World Junior Hockey Championships held in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan this December. Lindros was the tournament MVP and led the scoring race as well as the Canadian team to victory. He showed signs of being a better all-around player than Gretzky (i.e. his two-way play is MUCH better, he's a better skater, and he's bigger--not afraid to go
into the corners). Not too many people think that he will surpass The Great One in scoring and assists, but he'll definitely be up there. He is currently leading the Oshawa Generals and (I think) the OHL in scoring. This is despite taking close to a month off to go and play for Canada in the World Juniors. The OHL is one of the premier junior leagues in the world, so it's a good indicator of how he'll do in the NHL.

For all I know, this is the oldest internet hockey post. Dated December 22nd, 1981, 30 years ago almost to the day.

http://groups.google.com/group/net....fe029/c07bb6d595475b1b?q=NHL#c07bb6d595475b1b

I was barely 3 months old...

And the groups are still active, there's people there posting. At least there are in the Habs'.

EDIT: Mother of god, my old posts are still there. Major nostalgia here and now. "Andrej Kastsitsin" VINTAGE WRONG SPELLING FTW!

Before I was on here...I made 1910 posts on Usenet. Wow.

I knew in 2000 that Markov was going to be awesome. And some guy named HABitual told me Markov didn't have good hands. Ha.

That's pretty cool Phil.

Wouldn't it be something for someone on here to come across one of the posts they made back in the 80's? I wonder if most of those guys still take part in these online discussions?

We should try the "reply to author" button and invite them here.

People discussing hockey during the 80's.....online?

It is weird to read the Oilers being hated for reasons other than tanking i.e. winning.

"3. Glow-puck. What a crazy thing to oppose. It is a very real fact that
hockey on television is harder to watch than in person because of puck
visibility problems. USA TV standards are low resolution because they
were set so early. Because of this, there are frames when the puck does
not even register. I think glow puck is a pretty clever fix until that
glorious day when we can have hi-def TV."

20 April 1984 - 20:51:

"Yes, Yes, good ol' Wayne is powering his way into the books again.

(boy, oh, boy, just what this group needs to get lively...)

I, personally, cannot stand all the hype and hoopla that Edmonton gets,
just because they have a good player. The article that started all of this
mentioned that when Wayne was out, the Oilers got SLAUGHTERED! I find it funny
myself. Edmonton should be renamed :"Wayne Gretzky and everybody else". That
would seem reasonable. I still hold by my prediction, The Islanders over
the Oilers in the finals, in 5 or 6 games, with Gretzky held to under 5 goals.

And, then we have a 1983/1984 season prediction:

Here

Post about the Norris Trophy in 1986: It's still an argument today!

I was looking at the first reports of the deal to move Nordiques to Denver. Some people were thinking up names, which included a lot of combinations of:

"Denver", "Colorado", "Rocky Mountain" as the place name

Black Bears, Avalanche, Outlaws, Cougars, Renegades, Storm, Wranglers, Extreme and Rapids as nicknames.

Some funny ones were:

"the Colorado Rocky Mountain High Extremely Avalanchous Klondike
& Snow Skating Club"

"The Denver Colorado Rocky Mountain High Extreme Nordic
Avalanchous Mighty Ducks & 1 Hour Martinizing Service"
