How was he eligible to be signed in 2015, despite being draft eligible in 2016?

Anyone know how that works?

He was first eligible for the 2015 draft. He went undrafted but signed with the Flyers a few months later at their camp as an undrafted UFA. So he was never actually eligible for the 2016 since he signed. He would have been otherwise if he went back to the Q that year without an NHL contract.

There's a window to sign North American (trained) players with remaining draft eligibility before their ensuing junior/college seasons start.

It's not unusual to see a handful of guys earn contracts this way. The Kings signed Martin Jones after he went undrafted in 2008. With the 50 contract limit, teams still have to be judicious with handing out contracts.

The rule doesn't extend to European trained players however. The NHL rejected a contract that the Flyers had signed with Tomas Hyka; Ditto Edmonton with Vladimir Tkachev.

The Flyers went with 7D last night to get Myers in because Gordon isnt smart enough to bench the putrid MacDonald, so Myers didnt get to play much. Looked good though. Deserves to stay.

Well, Gordon decided Sanheim would be a staple on the top 2 along with Provorov and both are 22 so he isn't Hakstol either. He also trusted 20 year old Hart to be the starter.

Maybe give him time before saying he isn't smart? If it were not for the horrible start under Hakstol, your team would be poised to make the playoffs.

Let's remember it was his first NHL game, in the final quarter of the season.

All fair points. This is more about having to suffer through 5 years of Andrew MacDonald and the 50 years its taken off of my life.

Didn't get to watch the PHI/MON game outside of highlights, but it looks like Myers got 20 minutes and was +1 in a 5-1 loss.

He was the best player on the ice for the Flyers in a disastrous performance by most of the team. HC Scott Gordon said he was "excellent." Not bad for his first "official" game as a top 6 defensemen in the NHL (was used as #7 in his first game).

Didn't know it was his first full game yesterday, was really impressed with his game despite the rest of Philly's team looking pretty bad last night.

He should have been up 20 games ago, but Andrew MacDonald has dirt on the upper management of the Flyers organization.

Myers is ready to be a full time NHLer now. D prospects that we hoped would turn out well seem to be: Provorov, Sanheim, Gostisbehere and Myers. Hagg is passable and Morin should be making his NHL debut in a week or two. We'll see.

The answer starts with H, ends with L.

(Yes, there is more than one correct answer.)
As bad a McD is, they would have no veteran presence back there if he was sent down and Myers brought up. You'd be left with Gudas. He could've taken Frolin's spot at the 7th D but what good would that be for his development.

As of this season, Gudas has seven years in the league, Ghost four, and Hagg and Provorov three. Sanheim is the only guy back there with less than a season's experience.

If they wanted to carry Amac as a 7th for "presence", sure. But he has consistently been playing top 4 minutes for some time now, so the team has clearly valued his on-ice play over Meyers.

If the message they are sending to young player is "you have to earn your spot" then it looks like they are talking out of the other side of their mouth when veterans are gifted time despite making the same mistakes over and over. Be consistent with treatment and icetime.

The veteran presence thing is way overrated. What good is it to have veterans who can't play out on the ice while we have a stable of freaking unicorns sitting in the press box or on an AHL bus? I could maybe understand if we were talking about another guy like Gudas, but it's f***ing AMac that we've been throwing out there while Myers (who again, just so happens to possess the package of skills and physical traits most coveted across the entire league) bides his time in the A.

I mean, Dave Hakstol preferred playing Manning & AMac instead of Sanheim last year. It looked completely idiotic then, and it looks like gross incompetence of the highest order now.
