Streit #4, he can't carry a pairing anymore and his skating is too slow to be the offensive force he was before.

Ghost #2, he's hard to constrain to a set number. His skills and IQ are elite, but he's both still developing and his physical limitations stop him from winning battles. He's stellar at all other facets of defensive play though such as pass interceptions, stick placement, positioning, etc. So I said #2 just because he needs someone on his line who can win those battles.

MacD #5/6

Gudas #3/4

Del Zotto #3/4

Schultz #7...he can block shots. That's all I got.

Provorov #3, could end up a #1. He's only got a handful of games to his NHL career so far and he's extremely young so it's kind of unfair to rank him but I'd feel like he's already capable of anchoring a second pairing and has the talent to anchor a first pairing someday.

I don't rank the defensemen based on what rank HF thinks they are relative to each other. I do it by role.

Usually a #1 is two-way, all situations guy. When the game is on the line and it's 5v5, 3v5, 5v3...that defenseman is automatic.

And the odd number defensemen usually tend to be guys with PMD and offensive ability. Even number D men are SAH type. They are the first one out for PK but not PP.

Brodie #3
Gio/hamilton #4/5
Joki #4
Engelland #5
Wideman (ouside of the 2nd game) #5
Grossman #after where palat was picked in his 2nd draft

5 games is 5 games.

It's like me saying Maatta is now a #6 defensemen These past 5 games.

Or Matthew's is a 50 goal scorer

If Dumba keeps up his recent play, I'll have to up grade him to a 4. He is playing much more solid D recently. I think Stevens has been in his ear, and it's having an effect.

I'm wondering how much of his recent play is due to Suter being just that good?

Franchise #1 D - Erik Karlsson
He controls the play everytime he's on the ice. His time has been managed alot differently this year and he now plays all situations including the PK. By far our best player and there's really no need to justify why he's a franchise player.

High-level #3 - Dion Phaneuf
He's had a terrible start to the year taking incredibly bad penalties and just generally being out of position. With that said, he was very good last year with Ceci and I think he's just adjusting to a completely new system. To go from Babcock to Cameron and now with Boucher, he's had to adapt to three different coaching styles within the past year which casues a problem. He's a good leader for the team and can play regular on the special teams unit. He does need to stop taking himself out of the play by going for game changing hits, that'll just beat him up even more and cause him to take more penalties. I'm happy we acquired him though.

Low-level #3/High-end #4 - Marc Methot
Perfect compliment to Erik Karlsson. Such a sound defensive game, can move the puck fairly well considering that isn't his specialty and has become a big part of our defensive core. Underrated player who is a coach favorite.

Low-level #4 (Potential is High-Level #3) - Cody Ceci
Oozes potential but has had a really tough start to the season. He can move the puck well and is pretty decent defensively. He's had difficulty finding chemistry with the players he's been with (Cowen/Wiercioch/Borowiecki) but they were quite terrible. Looked very solid to end the season last year but he's been pretty bad so far. I think Boucher is going to give our young defensemen a longer leash offensively but he hasn't really taken advantage of it like we hoped in the first five games.

Mid-level #6 (Potential is Mid-Level to High-End #5) - Chris Wideman
Guy has been impressive this year, he can move the puck quite well and won the AHL Norris a few years ago. He seemed quite shy at the NHL level last year but has a bit more confidence this season. Boucher is using EK quite differently and he's no longer playing the full two minutes on the PP. One of Wideman/Ceci is going to have to jump at that chance and it looks like Wideman is ahead in the offensive department as of late.

Mid-level #7 - Mark Borowiecki
Physical player who has a huge heart but can't really think the game at an adequate level. I personally wouldn't mind seeing him during those high-intensity match-ups with physical teams but he played too much last year as he was a DC favorite.

Low-end #6 (Potential is Mid-level #2) - Thomas Chabot
So much potential in this player, excellent skater who can move the puck well. He's not ready for the NHL just yet despite being better than the Borowiecki, Claesson and others. He needs to play another year in junior with a year of AHL afterwards. We have bodies in front of him that can play at the NHL level and there's no real need to rush him into the NHL like we did with Ceci and Lazar.

Only reason I don't think hes a #1 is he seems to want to get rid of the puck way too fast on the PP. Being the QB on the PP is a big deal and he seems to not want the puck on his stick.

I also think he takes some shifts off, where he looks lackadaisical sometimes.

Seriously with the GM remark? You whine everytime somebody says something you don't agree with?

Whine? No, just call out brutal posts. Hedman is one of the top 10 (some/many might even say top 5) Dmen in the NHL... who truly believes he is a #2D? "nobody"!

Here are some other responses to your claim that Hedman is not a #1D...

Lmao Stralman as a #4 is just as funny. Both are top 30 defenseman, with Hedman without a doubt being top 5...

And all other Lightning posters assessments...

Hedman - 1
Stralman - #2
Garrison - #3
Coburn - #4
Sustr - 5/6
Koekkoek - 5/6
Nesterov - 6/7

Hedman #1
Stralman #2
Garrison #3
Coburn #5
Sustr #5
Koekkoek #6
Nesters #6/7

Hedman #1
Stralman #2
Garrison #3
Coburn #4/5
Sustr #4/5
Nesterov #7
Koekkoek ???

I can appreciate having a unique perspective or opinion, but please show me one other poster that believes and can support that Victor Hedman is not a true #1D in the NHL.

Dustin Byfuglien: 1 (though he plays a maddening game at times and has not been wonderful to start this campaign--the next two on the list have been better)
Toby Enstrom: 3 (he's been outstanding thus far this year)
Tyler Myers: 3 (also largely outstanding this year... if he keeps it up, that "3" will be changing)
Josh Morrissey: 4 (he's been mostly a rock, playing with an absurdly difficult-to-play-with-but-still-supertalented-partner in Buff... another guy who's stock can rise)
Paul Postma: 5/6 (makes a good first pass, quality skater... good bottom-pairing D)
Mark Stuart: 7/8 (a poor man's Douglas Murray when he's on... or a rich man's Brian Strait if you are a glass half-full kind of person)
Ben Chiarot: 7/8 (a slightly worse, less physical version of Mark Stuart for much of this year, with some marginal upside... would be a beast in the ECHL)

Small part, but he played with Suter a bit last year. He seems to be maturing, and in a good way. They asked him not to try and do too much, and just make the simple play, rather than try take it to the house every time he touches the puck. It's still early...he'll have some games where the old habits kick in...but if this new direction is a sign of the future it's a very good thing. He is also getting stronger and more physical. The points will always come for him...he is that sort of player. If he gets his defensive act together I see a lot of resemblances to Guy Lapointe, minus the smokes in the dressing room.
