Very nice signing. Just won the AHL championship, and was named best defensive dman in Hockey East and best Defenseman in New England (NCAA), in 2015. Surprised they let him go.

I wonder what the issue is with him. Two teams cut bait very quickly with him after he was a concern for Chicago to lose as a baby Ufa.

Let's see how it plays out

Scouting report from HF:

Talent Analysis

Paliotta is a physical blueliner with good size and skating ability. Drafted as a shutdown defenseman, he blossomed as an offensive defenseman during his college career. Paliotta played a key role in the resurgence of the University of Vermont hockey program and has continued to provide offense in the AHL. .
Future

Paliotta skated for the AHL's Lake Erie Monsters in 2015-16 in his first pro season — making a cameo appearance with the Blue Jackets in February. A big defenseman who skates well and has some offensive potential, he could challenge for a spot with Columbus in training camp. Long-term he projects as a solid second pair defenseman with some power play potential.

Apparently he played 1 game last year with the Jackets, 7 minutes, and did not look good. I guess that was enough for Jackets to give up on him

Asset-free acquisition of a RHD defensive prospect. Can't argue with that.

Chicago included him in Saad deal, probably at CBJ request, he was highly regarded coming out of college

Under the radar diamond in the rough have worked for us in the past and their is some to pick up every year. We should really load up on these signings with our prospect pool and SPCs. Boom or bust this is the best signing of the day.

Player signing that is.

I remember reading about Paliotta before he signed with Chicago. The Hawk fans were annoyed when Paliotta was included in the Saad trade. Columbus didn't qualify Stralman in 2011.

It's déjà vu all over again for the Blackhawks. One year after losing prized prospect Kevin Hayes to a Collective Bargaining Agreement loophole, there’s speculation that another draft gem could slip from their grasp the very same way this summer.

Defenseman Mike Paliotta is not Hayes, the blue chip forward who bolted to the Rangers last August, but the 21-year-old captain of the Vermont Catamounts has matured into an outstanding prospect since being selected by Chicago in the third round of the 2011 draft. Blessed with an NHL-ready frame (6' 4" and 205 pounds) and a nasty disposition, he’s always been projected as a punisher. But in the last two years he’s added a surprising offensive element to his game as well. Paliotta chipped in with 27 assists and 36 points in 41 games this season. Among defensemen, he tied for second in the nation in assists and fourth in points.

No one’s mistaking him for the second-coming of Duncan Keith, but his progress has impressed scouts.

“He’ll make his mark as a smart, positionally sound banger, but it’s good to see the offense coming,†one scout told SI.com. “When you leave a kid in school, you want to see that skill development. You want him to improve on what he does well and round it off with a few new tricks. He was a good prospect before. He looks like a player now.â€

The Hawks signed him and started the contract immediately after Paliotta turned pro. They traded him in the Saad deal. Columbus lets him go.

Columbus not liking a player isn't much of s red flag to me personally. They're...different with talent evaluation.

When it comes to these gambles on young unknowns, there is really no such thing as a bad signing. You need these.
