THE RULES

WHO IS A PROSPECT: http://www.hockeysfuture.com/whatmakesaprospect

HOW TO RANK PROSPECTS: Based on their value in a hypothetical trade or waiver draft. This takes into consideration a prospect's ceiling, how close he's to making it, his health, work ethic, the whole deal. Imagine there was a prospect waiver draft and you could keep only one prospect. That guy is our #1 prospect. Then imagine we had one more waiver protection. That guy is our #2 prospect.

Tommy Hughes needs to go up there.

Add Nanne. He and Nejezchleb were just drafted in the same round. Nejezchleb won #22 and Nanne still cannot get added. That's BS.

Mantha, add Nicholls.
His strong ECHL playoffs, as with St Croix, hints that the year in Greenville was effective for acclimating to the pro game.
GRW coach Stork is probably a better player development coach than Gernander

Personally I thought McCarthy should have been higher. Haggerty had a small edge over him as a scorer in college but McCarthy has a bit more of a complete game. But...as with the other free agent signees like Bodie and Zamorsky we shall see. Any of them a few months from now could be taking a big step up in the estimation of more posters here.

I'm going with Hughes here---though I think both Walcott and Mantha are intriguing prospects as well. Add Nanne.

The problem is that McCarthy is 2 years older, which is crucial at this age.

Add Nicholls. He will be in Hartford this year. He will play top 9 minutes. He is going to score. Whether he can be consistent enough all year remains to be seen.

What's the justification for putting Nicholls ahead of Kantor?

At the same age and position, Kantor made the AHL, while Nicholls got sent down. Obviously the coaches felt he's a more useful player right now.

Nicholls has more skill, but he's never been a prolific scorer. I've been saying since Grachev (and usually getting berated in response) that 80 junior points is not a lot, not at all a sign that one will be able to score in the NHL, maybe not even the AHL. But no matter how often this proves true, we still hear, "he scored over a point per game, that's a lot, he has scoring potential." Probably not, which is why he was unable to light up the AHL. Yogan, who barely has bottom-6 potential, scored over a point per game there. Nicholls had exactly .667. If he can't score at the NHL level, what will he bring that Kantor doesn't? Kantor has more energy, tougher, stronger, and has a much smaller jump to make from an AHL spark plug to an NHL spark plug than Nicholls from an ECHL second liner to a two-way NHLer.

Nicholls also hasn't improved much in the last 3 seasons.

went with Walcott. we are in slim pickings territory. Add Nicholls. He was over point/game in juniors and 20-22-42 in 63 games in his first pro season in the ECHL. I'd actually have him in the current spot. how has he not been added yet?

Not necessarily a problem. The same could have been said about Conor Allen last year. He's a couple years older than some of his competition as well. McCarthy like Haggerty and Bodie was considered one of the better college free agents last spring. Those two are quite a bit higher in the polls. I wouldn't be surprised to see McCarthy outplay Haggerty this year.

Noreau. Add Donnay.

I realize if you look at the raw physicals, the guy is another in the Rasmus Ristolainen mold. No guarantee he gets THERE. but even Risto lite is nice.

Noreau is another option a la McIlrath, only has to be a stay at home d and not screw up too much otherwise.
He seems to have heart to stick up for mates, and pulling for McIl/Noreau to make it, give us options to move Glass.
