If Andersson comes back for the playoffs, and his play is at the level it was in the preseason, I think he could be a real asset in the playoffs

EDIT: Especially with his foot injury healed

Considering the lack of forward depth in the system, they should get offered along with Fogarty. It’s either that or they try and bring in Henriksson & Edström, who are still a year away.

I know Fogarty isn't really a prospect anymore, but I had a chance to speak to him so I squeezed him in as well

Fogarty I have no issue with because he's a very good AHL player.

Fontaine and Gropp--only if the team really believes that they can either a) become solid, regular AHL contributors, or b) develop into fringe NHL players.

Fontaine is somewhat interesting, in that like Fogarty, he can do things that matter even if he's not scoring. That said, I didn't think he was much different in 2018-2019 than he was in his final Q season, and now he's coming off a major injury.

Gropp, on the other hand, I don't even think he's a bona fide AHL player. He's just not good. He's gotten marginally better away from the puck and is a bit better when it's on his stick, but he'll be 24 and has just not progressed to any real degree in three pro seasons. For me, he's probably a pass.

The reality is that you can find better players than both of those guys as free agents. So, again, unless you think they bring actual value to the organization beyond "being some depth" then I wouldn't qualify either. You can always try to bring them back on AHL deals if you want, since it seems unlikely either would receive an NHL deal. Gropp should head overseas even if he's qualified.

I would have been interested in retaining Ebert, I though he was pretty good.

Gross is interesting. Makes me think either Zug wants to try to convince him to forego signing with the Rangers, or his agent has reached out to gauge their interest (and maybe that of other teams) because they're getting mixed signals from the Rangers, or the Rangers have indicated they do not plan on signing him.

I have no problem with that, it’s just that with 8 forwards under contract(one of whom is Lias), they just need bodies to dress 4 lines.

    FYI, by my count.
there are 8 F's on NHL deals aside from Lias,
also the 2 NCAA F's HWP recently signed to AHL deals

    Kravtsov, Gettinger, Ronning, Elmer, Newell,
    Khodorenko, Rueschhoff, Richards,
    O'Leary, Whelan,
    then there's Andersson
and the RFA F's: Gropp, Fontaine, Leedahl,
and re AHL i believe HWP can 'qualify' Jones, Dmowski and McBride to retain their AHL rights

maybe Howden actually gets some AHL Time finally, but thats most likely if one of the above guys takes his NYR spot, so not a net add for HWP

among the UFA F's, I could see
    Fogarty or O'Regan returning,
    Nieves or Lettieri maybe not,
    ... Beleskey sayonara

Even if they kept Fontaine and Gropp, those aren't high-end guys by any means and they'll absolutely be looking to bring in some more good, veteran depth. They'll need to replace Nieves, maybe Fogqarty, maybe O'Regan, potentially Lettieri. The guys who were on AHL deals plus the NHL RFAs aren't going to be able to replace even half of that potentially lost production, so expect several veteran AHL players to come on.

PDG is another guy who spent the majority of the year down there and was a contributor. So they have a lot to replace.

Fontaine according to the Pack coaches was by far the best defensive forwards on the Pack. Quinn was a complete imbecile on him in camp. He was playing that loser Haley over him. Fontaine is also a beast on draws. He's a perfect 4th line NHL center candidate who is an elite PK guy.

Although I don't think Quinn was an imbecile for keeping Fontaine in Hartford, he does have very good defensive qualities to his game and is decent at faceoffs. If it weren't for the injury I could defeinitely have seen him get a call-up during. I'd bring back Fontaine on a one year deal and try to grab a better player for the top-6 over Gropp.

I'm fine if they QO Fontaine. He is good defensively and above average at FOs. He doesn't do much offensively. Even fourth line players are usually able to be decent offensive contributors in the AHL.

Fontaine also suffered a serious shoulder injury. What impact will that have on him? He was never particularly physical. Will that hurt other areas of his game?

Maybe he's worth the QO just to see.

They just might QO him as payback for the injury so he has someplace to land.

Don't have all the data, but IIRC NYR almost always QO draftees who spend majority of ELC in AHL, so Fontaine maybe most likely to QO, never been to ECHL

You're not wrong. They usually would QO a guy and then trade him for someone else's stagnating asset.

    Gross is a toss up

Wouldn't be surprised if they didn't sign him though. Was a cruddy pick to begin with

I would throw an ELC to Gross. I'm sure they'll have spots.

I don't think he's very good, but you never know.

I was hoping for Pivonka at the time, but I can't really be bothered about a 4th round pick not working out

Yeah I don't really care either. I also was hoping for either Pivonka or Weiss

You would hope he signed with Zug before June 1 in the off chance the clock would extend(although with a transfer agreement finally in place, that loophole would likely be gone.)

Yeah, at best it would extend the NHL rights window by 2 years but I don't think that's how the NHL will handle this situation
