Competition for McIlrath/Skjei?

McIlrath is subject to waivers so he almost has to be here. In addition I think we carry another D with NHL experience.

Skjei will make the team or he won't. I don't see him as being in competition with the vets. Even if he beats them out, it's not much use carrying Skjei as a 7/8.

I just see him as a warm body for training camp, but I can see him giving good competition to Diaz/McIlrath

You'll like him. He would probably be up with the league leaders in hits if he could find a solid role. Isn't entirely stonehanded. He's a tough, stay-at-home 6th defenseman. Some mobility concerns and defensive lapses at times, but he's an effort defenseman.

He's Dan Girardi :sarcasm:

He's slow and got burned by Nash a couple of times last season. Didn't watch Carolina enough to know much, but he was an NHL defenseman the last 2 seasons.

For those that bash the Rangers defense core, take a look at the quality of defensemen other teams ice, and look at their records.

HFD needs a veteran defenseman too.

Bellemore's not bad really, ideal 6th defenseman.

On an average nhl dcore, he's still a serviceable #6 but he shouldn't be anywhere close to the SC contending Rangers top6.

Would not trade Klein in cap dump only to replace him with scrubby bellemore

Bellemore is a better player than Kostka and he's a lot better option for us. He's a big, physical crease clearer. He's not going to throw the puck away to avoid getting hit. He was rumored to the Rangers last year at the trade deadline as an insurance D--so there is some reason to believe that the Rangers have been interested in him for a while. Kostka is slicker with the puck but he'll mail in the effort under pressure. He's a case of addition by subtraction.

Diaz has been skating with the guys this week, no?

Yes Diaz won't be going to the AHL if he doesn't win the spot. Rumors are that he has a nice contract waiting for him in Switzerland if he doesn't make it a la Brunner and Lombardi.

Competition and defensive depth is a good thing. The only experienced veteran in HFD is Chris "Nice Guy" Summers, and there's 4 guys on their entry level and a 2nd year pro, so an experienced Vet down there is a need.

Bellemore is awful and certainly not worth waiving McIlrath over.

just insurance if mcilrath doesn't quite cut it. Bellemore would fit the same crease clearing/hard hitting role.

If that were the case, he'd have signed with another team. Anyone would rather be a #6 on a bad NHL team than spend 70% of the season in the AHL and another 10% sitting in the rafters. If he could get himself a chance to play in the top-6, he'd have been there.

Well, Franson and Ehrhoff remained unsigned for the larger portion of the offseason so that's kind of a fallacy way of thinking.

But I agree, bellemore is at best, a fringe #6.
