It’s not just age…

Staal having the most 5v5 TOI this game and insisting on playing Martinook in the top six is mind boggling. I’d like to see Daniels gone.

I would have to look at shift charts to be sure, but Staal getting that much ice time would seem to be reflective of NYR going very top-heavy on their ones. They had a whole bunch of players in the 8-10 minute range, meaning they were rolling the top 6 really heavily and that will naturally bring Staal onto the ice a lot.

If there’s anything I’m going to blame Rod for in terms of the goalies, it’s the same thing as in 2021: you run a platoon all season and then insist on riding one goalie in the playoffs.

It was worse this year because we knew Andersen was great in his return with rest and avoiding overwork. I’m not saying bench Andersen, but Kochetkov should have been getting some games to keep Andersenfresh. Game 4 vs NYI, and probably one of the first 2 Ranger games.

If you won’t trust both goalies in the playoffs, one needs to show he can play that often in the regular season.

Staal can still contribute as a 4C/PKer role. But the issue is RBA will never use him in that role.
and unfortunately when you don’t have a true 2c he gets forced into more minutes because Rod doesn’t trust Kuzy or KK

Overall it all goes back to poor coaching decisions. No adjustments made till game 4, no screening the goalie till game 4... putting freddie back in even though kooch played a solid game and freddie was off a bit. That was very obvious. The team payed and lost due to the rangers having a better goalie and special teams. In the playoffs, those two areas seperate winners from losers....

Kooch played one game the entire playoffs after saving our butts by stepping up big during the regular season. Instead, we’re relying on a guy that

A: Has a history of choking in the playoffs
B: Was coming off a very long break in the regular season.
C. Had some very, very weak goals allowed in the series already

It’s not all on Freddie, but once again, we’re ending the postseason because our goalie was worse than the opposing teams. And unlike a lot of previous years, the opposing goaltender wasn’t playing out of his mind.
Freddie’s choking in the playoffs is a Toronto talking point because they can’t accept their team wasn’t good enough. They just blame the soft goal instead of the team blowing games he won for them

Staal is a washed up has been. That Game 5 goal was the last ounce of competitive play he had left
Totally agree. And he's getting a pass for taking the penalty that buried the team in a do or die game in the 3rd period. If it was someone else, the narrative would be you can't be taking penalties in that situation, but for Staal, hey let's blame Freddie for letting in the PP goal caused by Staal's penalty

Kooch wasnt good. Folks here act like these coaches don’t see these players in practice to see how mechanics are going
Kooch wasn’t great, but he wasn’t bad. There was really no reason to go right back to Andersen, he wasn’t helping the team to win… Something going on behind the scenes in practice or off the ice might explain it, or maybe Rod is just stubborn and deferred to the vet, because he is Rod. I’d just like some more clarity… both goaltenders were doing well in a rotation, why did we change that formulation, and not go back to it when the other thing wasn’t working?

1- make a f***ing save.
2- Fire Rod
3- empty the trash can on Gleasons desk- and then fire him
4- Stuff an NVIDIA chip into Tulskys mouth- and then fire him out the window
5- fire whomever goaltending coach is
6- make the Isles see the futility of their ways and get one of their goalies I guess

So what you’re saying is that he has a history of letting in soft goals in important games?

well, at least they now have a head start and plenty of time to figure out a gameplan going into the draft/ufa period.

-sign Jarvis
-sign RBA
-figure out who to keep Necas or Guentzel
-figure out if you really want to roll the dice with top 4 Chatfield next year or keep one of Pesce/Skjei
-jettison Kotkaniemi into the sun
-RBA will have to figure out how to deal with more than just 1 rookie on the roster all year
