Not really that strange if people are sick or injured.

Just last week on the Pens, Sullivan had Riikola practicing with the 3rd line and he’s our 8th or 9th Dman.

No This isn't just as a warm body filling in for practice. Smith has been lining up as a forward all season so far

Yes, this happens at times when players are sick/injured.

I guess you failed to read "Again, don’t read too deep yet. Brendan Lemieux is on the bench. He might still be under the weather".

Another gem thread by the OP

Smith has been lining up as a forward all season though, he is not just a warm body stepping in temporarily for practice

So Smith is getting paid as a bottom pairing defenseman and a 3rd line forward. Now that contract makes sense.

Versatility. You know what though, he has actually played very well. Not 4 million plus worth, but if he was making a million or 1.5 million I’d be fine with him and the contract.

Mathieu Dandenault, Marc-André Bergeron and Mark Streit were all used in our 4th line at some point. It happens.

When has he played on the 3rd line this season?
The final ~10 minutes after Edmonton scored their go-ahead goal in the last game.

Quinn has also confirmed that Smith will play on the third line against the Devils.
