With the unfortunate news earlier today that Crosby will be again sidelined from head injuries, the thought that Sid could have his career shortened has crept into almost everyone's mind. While I certainly hope he makes a full and speedy recovery and is able to resume his stellar career, I was thinking what it might mean to the NHL if he has to retire early. Based on the numbers available to us, would it be possible to calculate revenues gained from Crosby's draw to the average sports fan and revenues lost if the NHL were go on without him for the next 15 years or so. I'm trying to think of a comparable athlete for analysis but the only similar situation was Tiger Woods leaving golf and Michael Jordan leaving basketball. Jordan would be more comparable. Any numbers out there on this?

Editors note: I hope this thread isn't in perceived as in bad taste. I posed this question in the Business forum in hopes that an interesting discussion about Crosby's value-added to the league.
