Charlie Querrie was a lacrosse star (he's in the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame) as well as a newspaperman and arena manager. In 1918, he also managed the Toronto team that won the NHL's first Stanley Cup. He won another steering the Toronto St. Patricks in 1922. Mostly forgotten today, he sold his hockey team in early 1927 to a group of investors that included Conn Smythe.

For more on Querrie and his remarkable career + many feuds, as well as the story of how he almost (but not quite) named the Leafs, the full story is here, on Puckstruck.

Great story. Interesting that the Maple Leafs name had already been entertained for three months before Conn Smythe took over.

And after chairs and bags of sand being thrown, we now have eggs and – a wrench.
