Is there any way to compare the isles picking and getting rid of Bertuzzi then the same with niño.
Power forwards . *****ed and moaned. What do the isles always need ? Power forwards. Didn't Bertuzzi not sign then threaten to renter he draft. I remember the rumors were that we would pick him again.he signed last minute. We gave Bertuzzi a short trial then see ya. He was in the top 2-3 power forwards for a few seasons. Tough mean ugly, all the things a power forward should be and he could bury the biscuit.
Niño may have a similar career without as many fights. But he does get his nose in the mix and when minn played NYI he camped right in front and we could not move him out.

Not when he was with us, he picked that up later in his career. In fact, the Isles brought Clark Gillies in to mentor him and try to toughen him up. He didn't really want to play like a power forward at first and Gillies encouraged him to drop the gloves on occasion, which he rebelled against.
There's a reason we gave up on him so quickly.

Maybe not the best but this is the game guy whom brutally attacked another player on the ice. I don't care what he accomplished with Naslund that will forever be what he should be remembered for.
One thing about Nino...his contract is up at the end of the year. Yes, he would only have been an RFA, but I think we can all imagine him jumping overseas for a year or two to force a trade if he wasn't given the NHL ice time he thought he should get.
What would have happened if Nelson and Strome beat him out in camp? If Bailey and Grabner didn't suck this year and there was no room in the top-6 or pp for Nino? Would he have re-signed? What would his value have been at that point?

No one seems to acknowledge this point. His trade value was low because of attitude and this scenario dangling over our heads.
Overall, a crap selection and a horrific outcome for a 5th overall pick.
It's all a matter of perspective. Nino's attitude was a by product of having been misused. Had he not been rushed to the NHL for the sake of hitting the salary floor, his development could have been handled more appropriately and he might not have had a reason to complain.
Time will tell if it was a "crap selection." So far, he's playing pretty well for the Wild...considerably better than some of the players Cappy puts out there every night.
I don't know if it was a crap selection...Nino still has a pretty high ceiling. Did he always have an attitude problem? Does he even have one, or is he getting bad advice from his agent?
The problem was keeping him in the NHL for no reason a couple of years ago. Burned a year of his ELC, didn't help his development since he wasn't playing. If he had two more years on his ELC, the Isles aren't backed into a corner, forced to play him in the NHL or risk losing him to Europe. I also think Garth failed last season, not by leaving Nino in Bridgeport, but by not calling him personally and explaining matters. May have helped.

People really need to stop spouting this as fact when its NOT True! The Islanders were OVER the Salary floor before Nino was added to the roster. After the year before in Portland the Islanders felt they could better manage his development on the Island than sending him back to the WHL. Assistant coach Travis Green(Portland) felt he was more than ready if he could enhance his two way game.
Nino went into camp that year and impressed in drills and in his first preseason game then suffered a minor injury. When he returned the season had already begun and the Islanders felt he could learn his two way play from Pandolfo a vet with a good reputation for teaching younger players, while adjusting to NHL play offensively. Yes he Failed but that had NOTHING to due to his salary. could they have sent him back? Maybe, but I get the Impression they thought he would turn it around.
As far as last season if you look at the non-lock players they brought into camp they were all bottom six guys. Did you want Nino put in the bottom six again? Snow had already said he wanted Nino in top 6 minutes. If you are looking at Strome and Reinhart brought into camp look not farther than they were the only guys the Islanders did not have day to day control over. They were brought in ONLY to evaluate the spot in development and to give them assignments to take back to their Junior teams. Something not allowed in a normal season. Hence not keeping them around for early season looks.
EVERYTHING else is on Nino after that. The pouting ruined his chance at a call up and his trade value.

I listened to all of Edmonton's games, Griff missed Wednesay's game (flu) which they lost 4-3 to Prince Albert. Oil Kings are not the same without him, last year Edmonton really missed him when he was hurt in the playoffs.
Since the World Junior Reinhart has been more assertive offensively, it may not really be reflected in points but it has been important for Edmonton. If he keeps playing like he has recently and performs the way he did in last year's training camp, he has a good chance to make the Islanders this fall.

I'm not comparing Reinhart to Pronger, but what you wrote about Reinhart fits Pronger perfectly. Pronger was the kind of guy who had an incredible positive impact on his teams even if he didn't show up on the scoresheet. He was just a huge presence. Hopefully Reinhart's got at least a little bit of that going on.

Bad decisions by Isles management rushing a player and asking him to develop on the job at the NHL level. And yes..they could have recognized it and sent him back to junior hockey but figured he'd learn more by sitting in the press box. I wonder how many times that strategy has worked.
Mostly in the ECHL I believe but looked good stat wise. I really was pulling for him.

I think the writing is on the wall with this move. We just have so many better prospects in the pipeline.

Bertuzzi's breakout had a lot to do with playing on one of the most dangerous lines in the NHL.

Take those few years away and he's a 50-60pt player. Still very good, but not the 90+ point player everyone seems to remember him being.
