I'm voting for potential over what level the prospects are playing at now,or have been called up to watch,so it's Brisbois by a country mile over Subban.
Breezy is projecting to be a Tanev type D-man,hopefully with more offensive acumen.Subban's lack of size and inability to play defence, which is sorta important for a defenceman, likely makes him a career AHL power play specialist.Sure he's been recalled to the NHL to eat popcorn for a couple days but he's also been a healthy scratch in the AHL for several games due to his poor defence.
I'm picking McEneny over Subban in the next poll for the same reason.
I voted for Brisebois but he is absolutely NOT projecting to be Tanev.
Tanev is a top-5 defensive defender in the NHL. Any/every skinny defender who plays a bit conservatively isn't automatically 'another Tanev'. It's like saying that Subban projects as Erik Karlsson.
I can accept voting for Brisebois but I don't buy a country mile.
Brisebois is a dime a dozen junior prospect. Subban has already made the transition to pro which is the toughest step. Both are long shots and neither is a country mile ahead of anybody.
I didn't say he was another Tanev,I said he's a "Tanev type" defender.I don't think Brisbois will be Tanev either, they are different in some ways but have similar attributes (heady players with good puck moving abilities along with a strong defensive game) and Brisbois will probably play a similar role in the pros,ie a shutdown defenceman who can move the puck or be the safe one on a pairing.Tanev just happens to be the best comparison on the Canucks I could think of.
Brisbois was invited to the team Canada WJC selection camp despite unimpressive numbers due to being on a terrible team in the Q.That's something Subban (and dozens of "dime a dozen" junior prospects) weren't ever offered.
Subban is playing on the bottom pairing in the AHL behind Robak(career AHLer with no contract at the start of the season),Pedan(probably set adrift as a UFA after this season),Billins (played in Europe the last two years),McEneny (ECHL'er last year)and Sautner(should be in Alaska,by the sound of it).
That's not exactly a ringing endorsement by the Utica coaching staff.Sure he puts up points on the power play but having to be sheltered on the third pairing after nearly two full pro seasons doesn't bode well for the future.
It's amazing how thin this gets after #8.
It'll be between last year's 7th rounder, a guy with 7 points in his 2nd year in the AHL, or an undrafted signing who spent most of last year in the ECHL and might be released this summer.
I can't remember a time our system depth was this bad, and that it's coming at a time when we should be flush with prospects as we hit a low ebb is damning for this management group.
These options are pretty depressing after Brisebois, looking at it now. Sad.
So Subban at 8 then forfeit.
Basically. Then it's just a vote of who hasn't totally sucked.
I'm wondering if Brett McKenzie really deserves to be way down in the "hasn't totally sucked" category.
He's 18th in the OHL in scoring, 3rd in shots on goal, and tied for 2nd in short-handed goals. So at
very least he's got a nose for the net and good anticipation. So far as the eye test goes, he's got
good size and his whole thing seems to be relentlessly driving to the net. His skating seems pretty
good as he's always going in on breakaways, which seem to be a mix of hockey sense and skating
speed. So I'm wondering why McKenzie would be ranked so much lower than Gaudette and Lockwood?
No axe to grind here, just an honest question.
