I am bored in quarantine so decided to try and make a format that the NHL could follow for determining playoff teams. My goal was to be fair to teams and also keep the number of games played reasonable. Hopefully nobody has posted this same idea...

My idea starts by sorting every team by point percentage and then giving the top two teams in each division one of the top 4 seeds in the conference. Then the next 8 teams get entered into the proposal while the remaining teams are eliminated from contention. Take a look at how the games work and let me know what you like and don't like.

Round #1
Game #Home TeamVisitor Team
1Team 1Team 8
2Team 2Team 7
3Team 3Team 6
4Team 4Team 5
Round #2
Game #Home TeamVisitor Team
5Winner 1Winner 4
6Winner 2Winner 3
7Loser 4Loser 1
8Loser 3Loser 2
Round #3
Game #Home TeamVisitor Team
9Winner 5Winner 6
10Loser 6Loser 5
11Winner 7Winner 8
12Loser 8Loser 7
Round #4 Game 11 teams get a bye
Game #Home TeamVisitor Team
13Loser 9Winner 10
14Winner 12Loser 10
Round #5
Game #Home TeamVisitor Team
15Loser 13Loser 11
16Winner 14Winner 11
Game 17*Winner 15Loser 15
Game 18*Winner 16Loser 16

Game #17 occurs in the scenario where both teams played each other in a previous round and are now tied 1-1

Game #18 occurs in the scenario where both teams played each other in a previous round and are now tied 1-1

I get more attention from my ex girlfriend than I receive around here...:(

The fact that you're letting in teams that had no realistic shot at making the playoffs rules this out from the start, imo. Sorry, but there have been a number of other proposals on here that I think better accomplish the objective.
