Hey, pnep! How about a list of the most productive seasons (goals, assists, points, goalie wins) by players age 35 and over? I'm curious about something.

I don't have a list compiled or anything, but a player that sticks out is Messier in the 95-96 season (he turned 35 mid year). He scored 47 goals and 52 assists in 70-odd games, and was a runner up for the Hart.


Gretz's 97 and 98 seasons weren't too shabby either, 97 and 90 points respectively

39-year-old Mark Recchi has 207 points in his last three regular seasons combined, which is excellent given how underhyped he is, and his 16 pts with a couple of postseason game winners in the Hurricanes championship playoffs last year is also usually overlooked.

From that list it has to be Gordie Howe at age 41.

As soon as I saw this thread for some reason I immediately thought of Johnny Bucyk. This is a guy who had 51 goals and 116 points as a 36 year old. Sure Orr and Espo helped out a bit but he's the oldest 50 goal scorer in NHL history.

Teemu Selänne. He had 40 goals and 90 points last season and upgraded to 48 goals and 94 points this season. Most goals he's had since 97-98.

Also, Mario Lemieux's 2002-03 season has yet to be mentioned. He was held pointless in Pittsburgh's 0-6 opening night loss against the Leafs, but proceeded to go on a wild tear of 47 points in 22 games after that.
Then came the injuries to several Penguins' key players, including Lemieux himself, followed by the trading of Kovalev among others, and the obstruction crackdown cracked as well, for the 71st time. In spite of all these hindrances Lemieux put up a total of 28+63=91 points in 67 games and a PPG of 1.36, which was only second to Peter Forsberg, who had a career year.

That to me is right up there with Messier's 95-96, Howe's 68-69 and Bucyk's 70-71 as the greatest ''old-timer'' season ever.

The rise in Bucyk's stats once he turned 36 are incredibe. 51 goals and 116 pts. The amazing thing is that he maintained over a point per game the following five seasons. This was all done after he contemplated retirement due to injuries.

This is because of the expansion to 12 teams from 6, and that he was part of the high scoring Bruins, that took advantage of the weakness created by the expansion, yet struggled (relatively) in the playoffs against more balanced teams. For instance- they never beat Montreal in a playoff series.

Also, the Bruins sucked big time prior to that time. With Orr arriving and the Esposito trade, making them contenders from cellar dwellers, Bucyk finally had some help.

Agree with you. Bucyk always was a quality player but your reasons for the jump in stats was related to the factors you mention. Probably the biggest factor was playing with Orr. Several Bruins forwards had their best years playing with Orr and never did quite as well before or after. This includes Esposito, Hodge Cashman etc.
