Honestly, I am shocked Malkin is winning this in a landslide. Datsyuk was great on the offense & defense. I thought it would be 50/50.

His offense was not good enough to make up for the 15% difference in offense.

In his last 20 games he's scored 21 goals and 37 points, this is the best 20 game stretch of his entire career - he's done 37 points in 20 before but only had 11 goals during that stretch(in 2008).

Only once since the lockout has a player averaged more than a goal per game in a 20 game stretch.
Not Perry - 20 in 20 during his hart season.
Not Cheechoo - 20 in 20 during the 05-06 scoring binge
Not Crosby - 20 in 20 during his 25 game point streak

I would easily take Malkin, and I value two-way players. The gap in offensive ability is just too large. When he's on, Malkin is better than Ovechkin or Crosby.

Which also makes it a quite unreliable and arbitrary stretch, one that probably suits Malkin really well.

For instance.

Simon Gagne had 15 in 12, 20 in 19, 20 in 20, 21 in 21, 23 in 23.
Malkin currently has had 15 in 12, 19 in 19, 21 in 20, x in 21, x in 23.

But Datsyuk consistently brought his "A" game every game while he was in his prime. Beast on offense and defense.

I think I'd pick Datsyuk. His two way game is more important, no different than Bergeron's value to the Bruins.

Yes I'm biased, but this should be closer.

Obviously Malkin is the far better offensive player, but Datsyuk's 2-way play was incredible. I think Malkin is an unreal talent, maybe a top 50 player in NHL history, so I guess it's a compliment to Datsyuk to be in a poll with Malkin. My biased vote went to Datsyuk, but I understand people who picked Malkin.

Datysuk is beating Prime Ovi in a different poll (albeit going into playoffs) but losing badly to prime malkin. I think he should be losing both but I just find it weird .

Crosby had 26 goals and 24 assists during his 25 game point streak in 2010-11, but if you're limiting it to just 20 games then yeah this is correct.

It's interesting to note that after Ovechkin had his stretch of 23 goals in 21 games he had a 7 game drought, very unusual for him. If he had've potted a few during that time he would've approached 70 goals which would've been bonkers.

Not crazy that he is beating Ovechkin there, but Ovechkin is also probably unfairly underrated there due to team success.

The Ovy Datsyuk poll was regarding playoffs though. Ovechkin is always going to be in tough in those polls since he's never been past the 2nd round. Datsyuk is a proven playoff winner, whereas Ovechkin may be under the right circumstances but it's an unknown.
