There just isn't enough pressure among the owners or players to get the leaders to meet and create a new partnership.

Fans don't have a say in this process because the majority have spoken in surveys and polls in support of the NHL to win cost-certainty so the base will remain committed to the end for the NHL.

The one source of pressure for the players was thought to be the agents but the NHLPA placed fear into their hearts and souls by warning anyone trying to block the union's work would be decertified.

Many agents will tell you off the record, if they could talk freely among themselves and with their clients, the plank walk leadership of Goodenow and Saskin would not have lasted this long.

It is going to take a rich, strong player alongside a powerful agent to shift the belief of the players that a cap along with some compromises is a good deal for the future of 700 NHL jobs.

Most of the players already would would accept a salary cap and be willing to start up the season. The NHLPA won't allow an official vote because the leadership knows that too. Several reputable members of the hockey media have told stories of informal team votes (just using a show of hands) on if the players on team X would accept a cap or not, and they all say the majority of players would play under some form of cap system. Pierre McGuire (sic?) even said that he believes 70% of the players would play under a cap system. Jeremy Roenick even admitted the last NHLPA offer was to play 3 years no cap, 3 years with a cap.

Is rich, strong Trevor Lindens represented by powerful agent Meehan? When Linden is involved, and Goodenow isnt, one might guess some pressure by the agents.

Listening to agents talk on tv, i get the impression they align with the players position, and arent likely to try and talk them out of it. Of course agents are negotiators by trade and may have a different approach to doing it.

An agent would have to be brain dead to come out and say something against the NHLPA.
