Salary Cap: Predict Our Contracts - And MAF

We've seen tons and tons of comments about what our guys will be signing for over the coming weeks. I decided to start a new thread with the idea of keeping it all in one easy spot and to see how accurate we all are a month from now.

The only thing I'll ask is that we try to be specific as possible. Keep the contracts to 500k variations (3.0-3.5). If it's term dependent, say so. No need to put down the team if the player goes elsewhere, just indicate if it's PIT or someone else signing the deal. Lets see how accurate we all are 1 month from now.

So basically 2 questions. Does MAF get traded or drafted in the ED? And what do our UFAs/RFAs sign for?

Fleury traded or drafted? Traded.

Cullen (41): Retires
Kunitz (38): 1x2-2.5m or 2x1.75-2.25m. 1 yr deal here, 2 yr deal elsewhere.
Daley (34): 3-4 years x3.5-4m, moves on.
Bonino (29): 4-5 years x3.8-4.3m, re-signs.
Hainsey (36): 2x 2.8-3.3m, moves on.
Ruhwedel (27): Re-signs, 2-3 years 800k-1.3m

Dumoulin: 4-5 years 3.75-4.25m
Schultz: 4-5 years 4.8-5.3m
Sheary: 1 year, 2-2.5m or 3-4 years 3-3.5m
Sundqvist: Re-signs, 2 years <700k 1way
Archibald: Re-signs, 2 years <700k 1way

Cullen (41): Retires
Kunitz (38): 1 year, $1.75 mil from the Pens.
Daley (34): 4 years, $3.9 mil per from a young team like TO/FL/EDM.
Bonino (29): 3 years, $3.3 mil per from the Pens. I'm lower than everyone else but that's still a substantial raise.
Hainsey (36): 1 year, $2 mil from a playoff team.

Dumoulin: Roughly identical to Maatta's.
Schultz: 5 years, $5 mil per year Pens.
Sheary: 2 years, $4 mil per year.
Sundqvist: Two way deal
Archibald: Two way deal

Well at this point I have to say drafted by Vegas, although I still maintain MAF is too nice of a guy haha. I think he could've gotten his stack of cash and found at least an okay deal somewhere, effectively profiting a few mil. Assuming he wanted it to be a more amicable departure.

Fleury - I'm going with traded either to Calgary right before expansion or Vegas doesn't pick him and other teams get in on the trade after.

Cullen (41): Retires
Kunitz (38): 1 x 1.75MM here, 2 x 2.5MM somewhere else
Daley (34): 3 x 4m, moves on.
Bonino (29): 4 x 3.75MM here, 5 x 4.5MM somewhere else
Hainsey (36): 2 x 3MM, later dude
Ruhwedel (27): Re-signs, 2 years 800K

Dumoulin: 4-5 years 3.5-4MM
Schultz: 4-5 years 4.5-5.25MM
Sheary: 3-4 years 3-3.5MM
Sundqvist: Re-signs, 2 years <800k 1way
Archibald: Re-signs, 2 years <800k 1way

Some of this is wishful thinking or what I think the Pens should sign these guys for, not necessarily what they will get.

My best guess is that Kunitz and Ruh are back out the first group with the other players either pricing themselves out or Pens letting them go.

Second group will all be back. My preference is to lock up Dumo, Schultz, and Sheary with term.

Tried to be as specific as possible. I think Bonino is one that could land up re-signing but I feel like we won't give him the term that he's looking for.

Are we locked in to giving Sundqvist a one way based on the CBA or something? I don't know why we'd give him that at this point.

No, but that's usually how it seems to go. You get the player on a fairly cheap contract (look at Rust, Wilson, etc) but you give them guaranteed 1 way contracts. The risk (especially with a European) is that if we only offer a 2way deal is that they may say F it and go back to Europe where they could likely earn 2-4 times as much money.

But it's really a budget thing. We can sign them to whatever we can get them to agree to. Anything under 975k would not count against the cap if they're in the minors (other than +35 contracts).

My predictions:

Fleury traded or drafted? drafted

Cullen (41): retires
Kunitz (38): re-signs 1x1.5m or retires
Daley (34): moves on
Bonino (29): re-signs 4x3.9m
Hainsey (36): moves on
Ruhwedel (27): re-signs 1x1m
Streit (39): moves on or retires

Dumoulin: re-signs 5x4.1m
Schultz: re-signs 5x4.7m
Sheary: re-signs 2x2.5m
Sundqvist: re-signs 2x950k
Archibald: re-signs 2x950k
Pouliot: re-signs 1x650k
Corrado: re-signs 2x750k

The priority are Dumolin and Schultz. Sheary I won't give him more then 2 years to pair him with Guentzel ELC. Bonino is a fair deal, but he would get more on the open market. Pouliot will get his Hail Mary contract. Corrado is an interesting project. Kunitz I will give him an opportunity to stay, but after July 1st to see what's out there.

Fleury traded or drafted? Drafted, it's way too late for him to be traded

Cullen (41): Retires
Kunitz (38): Leaves as a free agent unless the Penguins trade Hagelin
Daley (34): Leaves as a free agent to someone who's going to instantly regret the contract
Bonino (29): Leaves as a free agent to someone who's going to instantly regret the contract
Hainsey (36): Leaves as a free agent and signs with another cup contender for $3 million a season
Ruhwedel (27): Leaves as a free agent and signs with a team offering him a regular spot

Dumoulin: 3 x 3.5M
Schultz: 3 x 4.5M
Sheary: 3 x 3M
Sundqvist: 2 x 700k
Archibald: 2 x 625k
Pouliot: 2 x 800k

Other predictions:

Penguins sign Stone in free agency for 3 years at $4 million per year (they were interested in Stone at the deadline I believe)
Penguins sign a bottom-6 winger with toughness that can play up in the lineup, I think Stewart fits that well but other people won't agree with that
Penguins end up trading for a 3C because all of the UFA options either aren't very good or will cost too much

Fleury traded or drafted? Traded early Wednesday - he will be on camera talking about the expansion draft as Vegas' rep. Vegas selects Hagelin or Cole (..sadly). Hopefully I'm wrong or MAF gets a decent return.

Cullen (41): Decides to do 1 more year at 2M
Kunitz (38): 12 years x 4.14M a year, sponsored by GNC for longevity.
Daley (34): Signs with Toronto for 3-5 years at 3.5M
Bonino (29): Signs a 3x4 here with the Pens after being offered 4.7 by some non-contender.
Hainsey (36): Leaves via FA
Ruhwedel (27): Leaves for a team giving him a spot

Dumoulin: 3x3.25M
Schultz: 5x4.8M
Sheary: 3x2.75M
Sundqvist: 2x 7-800k
Archibald: 2x??

Fleury traded or drafted? Drafted and no other players/picks moving between the Pens and Knights because of Fleury. There might be another trade of course...

Cullen (41): Retires, unfortunately
Kunitz (38): 1x1m, maybe 1,5m
Daley (34): around 2x3m, moves on.
Bonino (29): 4x3.5m
Hainsey (36): 1x1.5m or so
Ruhwedel (27): 2x750k, 1way

Dumoulin: 4 years 3.5m
Schultz: 5 years 4.5-5m
Sheary: 2 years, 3.5m
Sundqvist: Re-signs, 1 year 750k 1way
Archibald: Re-signs, 1-2 years 750k 1way

Yeah, it seems I have Daley as the only one leaving the Pens (plus Cullen retiring).

edit: damn I'm good, so far no mistakes!
