Only if it's within immediate reach. If it's farther than that you HAVE to go to the bench.

"immediate reach" is such a subjective term that's determined at the refs discretion which is stupid.

The helmet was in the same vicinity as Wood when he lost it.

He could easily have skated to it, picked it up, put it on, and get back into the action.

Well the rule explanation on the air I heard made it much stricter than the way it reads when I just looked it up.

OTHER APPROVED RULE CHANGES
HELMETS: Subject to further consultation with the NHL Players' Association on precise language, a Player on the ice whose helmet comes off during play must (a) exit the playing surface, or (b) retrieve and replace his helmet properly on his head (with or without his chin strap fastened). A Player who is making a play on the puck or who is in position to make an immediate play on the puck at the time his helmet comes off, shall be given a reasonable opportunity to complete the play before either exiting the ice or retrieving and replacing his helmet. Failure to comply with the above will result in a minor penalty being assessed on the offending player. A Player who intentionally removes an opponent's helmet during play shall be assessed a minor penalty for roughing.

I don't see the issue here.

Wood was making a play on the puck and lost his helmet in the processs.

Therefore, per the rule, he had the right to have a reasonable opportunity to retrieve and replace his helmet.

(note where it says "before either exiting the ice *OR* retrieving and replacing his helmet")

Wood and Hynes apparently did not realize they could do that, I guess.

Though it's Hynes job to know the f'n rules to help his player understand them....

Frankly, I think there's many more important things to complain about than not fully knowing the new helmet rule.

At this point, I just want to turn every thread into Nico praise.

What a fantastic player already. If Shero gave him 9x8 right now, I'd still say we're likely to come ahead.

These shit show games have actually just highlighted to me how good he is.

Yes but my focus was on what someone said regarding Wood and his decision to go to the bench.

I was seeking clarification, not complaining for the sake of complaining.

Oh please.... :whatever:

How many seasons has Buffalo had where they won a couple of games here and there to start the season and then slowly drifted out of a playoff spot by Thanksgiving?

There is no reason to believe that the Sabres will end up any different this year.

The Sabres beat the Devils because the Devils beat themselves via No Structure, Bad Coaching, Bad Defense and Bad Goaltending.

Uh, this was the first time since 2012 where we won our first two games (in fact, it was the first time since then we had won our season opener).

C'mon dudes. I can speak from experience that whenever I drop a stick or lose a helmet - it is much faster/easier to just go to the bench and get one or get off the ice. I can't tell you how much of a dingus you look like trying to pick up one or the other when the play is going back the other way.

Wood did the correct thing.

Ignorance is bliss (and in abundance) in my case. :D

But year after year, the Sabres just fade away and aren't even in the playoff conversation by Thanksgiving (earliest) or Christmas(latest).

What makes you believe this year would be any different?

Except when he went to the bench(and I saw this on TV), he didn't get a helmet...he just got off the ice which is him attempting to follow a stupid-as-f==k rule that never should've been implemented.

Or a rule that should've been amended to "You lost your helmet? Pick it up and put it back on or your team gets a penalty."

I think that would've been the more simple way of doing this.

The other wording regarding "going to the bench" and "immediate vicinity" makes the rule a bit to convoluted to properly understand.

Wood's helmet was nearby and he could've skated over and picked it up.

Who the f--k cares about what you look like when you go to pick up your helmet?

So "looking good" is part of the prerequisite of being an NHL Player?

"Dingus", indeed. :silly:

No Glen - You simply don't have time to do these things during a shift. A stick is one thing. You can grab one and go if someone hands one to you (and sometimes it is wrong-handed).

What coaches tell you is: If you have an equipment problem, get off the ice and make the change on the fly.

I've seen many a beer league player bending over in the corner trying to pick up their stick or gather their helmet while the opposing team takes the puck down the ice and scores.

Whatever your problem - broken lace, lost glove, lost helmet - they tell you to get off the ice ASAP.

Go out to the garage, put on some hockey gloves, (or oven mits, or a baseball glove or whatever) and try to pick up a hockey stick. Or a helmet. Or really just about f***ing anything. It's hard to do when you're just standing around but in the midst of a live game, it can turn into a complete clown show.
