In the early 1980s the Oilers almost swapped cities with the Leafs. Pocklington (the Oilers owner) was excited but Ballard backed out

Brought this up in a different thread today: Mexico City hosted the 1994 Pacific Cup. The tournament would eventually become the Hlinka Gretzky Cup.

It's amusing if you watch the 1995 NHL Draft footage on YouTube. There were times when the commentators described a prospect like "He had a tough season but he looked good in Mexico" without a joking tone.

When the NHL added the draft lottery into the January 1995 CBA, they managed to not figure out the rules until the May 1995 GM meetings after the regular season had already concluded.

At the same time, the Orlando Magic were the #1 seed in the NBA Eastern Conference and en route to an NBA Finals appearance. In 1993, Orlando had improbably won the draft lottery despite having the lowest odds; They'd eventually trade down and turned the pick into Penny Hardaway.

Since it looked like the Magic had a burgeoning dynasty, some NHL GMs successfully argued that the league should avoid an "Orlando" situation and placed a limit on how far a team could move up.

The lottery procedure remained unchanged through 2012. So for 17 years, Shaq/Penny had an indirect influence on the NHL Draft.

in 1978 the Oilers owner played backgammon with the Jets owner. The winner got Gretzky.

Per wikipedia the story is quite a bit different.

The Indianapolis Racers owner, Skalbania, was in talks with both Winnipeg and Edmonton about selling Gretzky and two other Racers players. He offered the Jets owner to play a game of backgammon. If the Jets owner won, he'd get Gretzky, if he lost, he'd have to give Skalbania shares in the Jets. The Jets owner declined to play, and Skalbania sold Gretzky to Pocklington for $700k.

Justin Holl scored 2 goals in his first 2 games, by that pace he would've broken Gretzky's record in 12 NHL seasons

Justin Holl scored 9 goals in his next 321 games, by that pace he would've needed to play only 400 more NHL seasons to break Gretzky's record

Vitali Kravtsov was born closer to Vancouver than to Moscow.
I thought he was omnipresent, omnipotent and omniscient or am I thinkjing of someone else?

The Florida Panthers attempted to draft Alex Ovechkin in the 2003 draft.

Dudley was convinced that he could draft Ovechkin due to the fact that there had been a number of leap years during the course of his lifespan. Dudley argued that the leap years made up the difference in days and in fact outright attempted to draft Ovechkin in 4 different rounds at the NHL draft.

He was obviously taken 1st overall in 2004 by Washington.
