Musically, it’s X-Men. The Thundercats song isn’t anything remarkable.
Now, that being said... my goodness I forgot that the Thundercats intro was so well animated.
I mean think about the source material here. Think about a pile of Thundercats toys and someone saying “make this look interesting in a cartoon theme intro”. Then watch what they actually came up with. It’s really damn good for the genre.
Ironically for the purposes of this thread, a better theme song would have made that an all-time great cartoon intro.
Go type "Thundercats cover" into YouTube...
There's a reason why so many people have covered the song... and that reason is because it's awesome!
Listened to the ThunderCats one and thought there was no way the second one could be worse, but I was wrong.
The X-Men theme, though forever burned into my millennial brain, was at best derivative and at worst a direct rip off of this obscure Hungarian banger (@ the 16 second mark):
I don't even know the Thundercats theme - the artwork of that show turned me off as a kid, plus I hate cats - so this one doesn't end in a tie for me, rather both themes lose.
Ehhhhh I don't see it. And I was squarely in the demographic for the toys and series, so it's not like I don't have a really heavy nostalgia factor in play. I just don't see the distinction between this and any other 80s theme song.
If you're into 80s theme song covers, though, check out Cybertronic Spree:
I did not know that these guys were a thing!
And they're a touring bad too!!!!
Depending on how un-fuicked the world become by the fall, I might have to make my way to one of their concerts.
