This system agrees with the actual Conn Smythe selection 16 times in the past 38 years. Not great - but not too bad for a purely statistical system.

Still, there are a lot of close calls. Nine times the system ranks the actual Conn Smythe winner as the 2nd best playoff performer, and six times it ranks the actual winner as the 3rd best playoff performer. From that standpoint, there have only been seven Conn Smythe winners since 1980 who weren't even in the top three.

Sometimes, the difference arises because the best player (per the point allocation system) was on a losing team, which is a tough obstacle to overcome. See Logan Couture (2016), Hendrik Lundqvist (2014), Roberto Luongo (2011), Daniel Alfredsson (2007) and most notably Peter Forsberg (2003) - who was evaluated as that year's top performer despite not even making the Stanley Cup finals.

The least deserving Smythe winners according to this system were Goring (1981 - often questioned), Stevens (2000 - a good pick - the system doesn't read defense as well as it should), Lidstrom (2002 - a victory by committee, with several teammates ranked just above him), Niedermayer (2007 - not bad, but many players were close) and Crosby (2016 - probably a lifetime achievement award).

This thread has been updated for the 2018 playoffs.

An important note - I realized that the first two tables that I had initially posted were based on an outdated version of the system, which overrated goalies and underrated everyone else. The first table has been updated, and the second has been deleted. These results make it easier to compare players of all positions directly. (Generally, the ranking of forwards vs other forwards is unchanged - just that forwards, as a whole, rank better than they did before).

Alexander Ovechkin finally had the Conn Smythe calibre playoff run that we all knew he was capable of having. He still ranks lower than I'd like for a player of his calibre - but players like Nieuwendyk, Zetterberg and even Bossy are starting to move within reach.

Sidney Crosby moves up to 16th place (10th among forwards), virtually tied with Steve Yzerman.

Marc-Andre Fleury's surprising run (which included a historically great performance through three rounds) pushes him to 36th all-time, and 5th among goalies.
