I think the 1979-1994 era in the NHL really changed hockey. Has there been anyone who was in the NHL before 1979 and was still around after 1994? I know Bryan Trottier came close - he played in the 93-94 season and guys like Gretzky and Messier played after the 94 lockout but they started their career in the 79/80 season so they don't count either.

Yeah that's a weird era for that. For some reason players couldnt seem to be able to adjust in the late '80s early '90s. The lockout hurt a lot of guys too. Some never came back. I think you'll find pretty much the same thing with 1970 onward. Correct me if I'm wrong (and I might be) but I think Gilbert Perreault is the last guy to play in the NHL who started in 1970. He retired in November of 1986.

Gilles Meloche lasted a season longer than Perreault.. but only played 2 games in 1970-71.
