This is inspired by the current "players who played for Atlanta" thread, and I guess it's a bit like the old "Dude, what are you doing in that uniform" one. Anyway, the point is to list players most of us have completely forgotten (or never knew) played for a given team at some point, however briefly.

I'll start with my club, the Edmonton Oilers:

-- Mike Rogers: Future three-time 100+ NHL point scorer played 122 games with Edmonton in the WHA from 1974 to 1976... and then came back in 1985-86 to play the final 8 games of his NHL career
-- Jacques Plante (WHA): Legendary goaltender played his last pro-games for the Oilers in 1974-75
-- Norm Ullman (WHA): Former NHL All Star and Red Wings legend played his last 144 pro games (plus 9 playoff games) for the Oilers from 1975 to 1977
-- Dave Dryden: Former Chicago Blackhawk and Buffalo Sabre (and Ken's brother) played his last seasons for Edmonton of the WHA, and 14 games back in the NHL (alongside Gretzky and Messier) in 1979-80.
-- Colin Campbell: Current NHL executive Vice-President, and Gretzky's future coach with the Rangers, was a journeyman NHL defenceman who spent 1979-80 with Edmonton
-- Bobby Schmautz: Spent 1979-80 with Edmonton
-- Garry Unger: Former iron-man center with mid-70s St. Louis was in Edmonton from 1981 to 1983
-- Laurie Boschman: Future Winnipeg Jet was an Oiler from winter '82 to spring '83
-- Billy Carroll: Islanders' Dynasy-era center was an Oiler 1984 to 1985 (thus becoming the only player to win a Cup with both the Islanders' and Oilers' Dynasties)
-- Kent Nilsson: An Oiler in spring 1987 (won the Cup)... and again for six games in 1995
-- Danny Gare: Sabres' sniper was an Oiler for his final 18 NHL games in 1986-87
-- Geoff Courtnall: An Oiler for 12 games plus the Cup run in 1988
-- Reed Larson: Former Red Wings' (and Bruins') hard-shooting offensive D-man was an Oiler for ten games in 1988-89
-- Miroslav Frycer: Former Leafs' sniper was an Oiler for the final 14 games of his career in 1988-89
-- Scott Mellanby: Former Flyers' and future Panthers' regular was an Oiler 1991-1993
-- Dave Manson: Oilers' D from 1991 to 1994
-- Brent Gilchrist: Montreal, Dallas, and Detroit winger was an Oiler in 1992-93
-- Bryan Marchment: punishing D-man was an Oiler 1995-1997
-- Ray Whitney: Oiler for 9 games in 1997 before Florida picked him up on waivers (scored another 950 points after that!)
-- Peter Nedved: His final 19 games were with Edmonton in 2007
-- Geoff Sanderson: His final 41 games were with Edmonton in 2007-08
-- Andrew Ference: Former Bruin was an Oiler from 2013 to 2015... a forgettable and dire era.

So, who ya got??

I would imagine some guys that played regularly for the Wings in the seasons between their most recent Cup wins are easily forgotten.

Between '98 and '02: Todd Gill, Petr Klima('s "comeback"), Wendel Clark, Ulf Samuelsson, Bill Ranford, Ken Wregget, Pat Verbeek
Between '02 and '08: Dmitri Bykov, Jason Woolley, Derian Hatcher, Ray Whitney, Jamie Rivers, Steve Thomas, Cory Cross, Joey MacDonald, Danny Markov, Brad Norton, Kyle Calder... Robert Lang and Mathieu Schnieder fit here as well, but probably aren't as forgotten

There are also guys who were around for just the year, rentals or spare parts in one of the Wings four most recent Cup wins and moved on shortly after: Tomas Sandstrom, Tim Taylor, Jamie Pushor, Dmitri Mironov, Mike Knuble, Anders Eriksson, Jiri Slegr, Fredrik Olausson, Uwe Krupp('s "return"), Dallas Drake, Aaron Downey

Lastly, these guys are probably pretty well forgotten: Somewhere around November and December of 1999, the Wings were getting absolutely hammered by injuries to forwards. They brought in Verbeek, but still had a ton guys out. Bowman ran a 4th line combo of young and/or rookie guys Yuri Butsayev, Stacy Roest, Darryl LaPlante and/or Marc Rodgers that earned his praise and got a surprising amount of ice time some nights. None of the guys ever really amounted to much at the NHL level after that year, but Roest and LaPlante at least showed enough to convince the Wild to take them in the expansion draft over the small handful of veterans exposed.

Olli Jokinen played 6 games for the Leafs in 14-15. Was equally forgettable as a Pred and Blue in what was his final season.

The best player Gordie Howe ever played with on the Detroit Red Wings, Doug Harvey.

I'd add Owen Nolan and his 9 games there, too. Not as odd as he was with the Nordiques, but still not thought of much.

Some interesting fun facts about a few of these players:

Sandstrom got the primary assist on McCarty’s iconic Cup winning goal

Knuble’s NHL debut coincided with Fight Night vs Colorado

Olausson scored the OT goal in game 3 of the 2002 West Finals (although it’s probably not as well remembered as the Statue of Liberty in game 6)

In the history of Red Wing overtime playoff goals, Olausson actually has as many OT postseason game winners as Yzerman, Lidstrom, and Fedorov.

Seat of the Empire
Whalers (in ascending order of GP):

Ken Holland - actually played in NHL, suiting up in goal for Whalers in 1 game in early 80s before playing 3 more in Detroit
Barry Pederson - 2+2 in 5 GP in 91-92, before being traded to Bruins for future considerations to end his career where it all began
Richard Brodeur - 6 GP, ended his career in Hartford
Todd Richards - former Columbus coach played all of his 8 career GP in Hartford, and in 90-91 actually scored 4 assists in just 2 games (as defenseman!). Never scored a point after that.
JS Giguere - 8 GP to start his career before being wastefully traded to Calgary
Bobby Hull - 2+5 in 9 GP in 79-80 to end his career
Jerguš Bača - legendary D-man of Slovak NT played 10 games over two seasons in early 90s for Hartford (it's also all his NHL experience)
Derek King - 6 pts in 12 GP in Whalers' last season
Hnat Domenichelli - started his career in Hartford before being traded to Calgary and eventually becoming somehow Swiss NT player
Don Maloney - 14 pts in 21 GP in 88-89
Shane Churla - started his career in Hartford, playing 22 games, scoring 0 goals
Tim Kerr - ended his career in Hartford, playing 22 games, scoring 0 goals... but 6 assists!
Tiger Williams - ended his career in Hartford, playing 26 games, scoring 6 goals!... but 0 assists
Dave Barr - traded to Hartford by St.Louis in the beginning 86-87, he scored at 0.2 PPG for 30 games in Hartford... then promptly went to 0.7 PPG in 37 games in Detroit, after Hartford traded him in the midseason
Paul Gillis - former Quebec checker ended his career by playing 33 games in Hartford
Paul Fenton - of Wild GM infamy, started his career in Hartford, playing 34 games in mid-80s. Then on August 26, 1991: Traded to Hartford by Calgary for future cash. But he never played for Whalers again, as he was traded in October to San Jose.
Rick MacLeish - 22 pts in 34 GP in random half-season for the Whalers
Norm MacIver - 23 pts in 37 GP in 88-89, came in the Maloney trade. Inexplicably traded for trash in the offseason.
Jim Sandlak - killed his career in Hartford, playing 40 games and getting 8 pts before returning to Vancouver to end his career where it began
John Stevens - former Flyers' coach played 44 games in Hartford, which constituted most of his career
James Patrick - 28 pts in 47 games in mid-93-94. Got him from Rangers for Steve Larmer, who was just acquired from Chicago for Eric Weinrich. Then flipped him after the 47 games to Calgary for Gary Suter, just to flip Suter around immediately for Frantisek Kucera and Jocelyn Lemieux. WTF!?!?!? Actually this warrants more precise listing of the trades, see the end of the post.*
Brian Lawton - of the #98 infamy, played 48 games and scored 29 pts for Hartford in late 80s
Jeff Brown - 38 pts in 48 games after being acquired from Vancouver in 95-96, then injured for the season in first game of next season and never properly recovered, playing just 60 games over 3 seasons
Dave Lumley - of leaching off Gretzky infamy, played random 48 games with 28 pts for Hartford in midst of Oilers seasons, coming & leaving through waivers...
Jimmy Carson - continuing the Gretzky connection run, 20 pts in 49 games to end his career in Hartford
Dave Semenko - never enough Gretzky connections! Semenko played 51 games in Hartford before ending his career in Toronto.
Brian Propp - 29 pts in 65 games to end his career
Mike McEwen - 67 games over 3 seasons to end his career
Mark Hunter - 74 games over a season & a bit to (almost) end his career. Played 7 more games for Washington before hanging them up.
Brendan Shanahan - 79 pts in 76 games of infamous acquisition for Pronger & insta-captaincy followed by quitting & being traded to Detroit
Róbert Petrovický - another Slovak NT legend that started his NHL career by playing 77 games for the Whalers
Greg Adams - the worse version. Impressive -45 in 79 games in 82-83.
Marc Bergevin - current horrible GM of Canadiens played 79 games for Hartford in early 90s
Gordie Howe - ended his career by scoring 41 pts in 80 GP in Whalers' first season at age of 52.
Pierre Larouche - random season & half in early 80s, playing 83 games & scoring 90 points
Nick Kypreos - of TV infamy, 85 GP over two seasons
Eric Weinrich - 87 GP over season & a bit
Steve Konroyd - 92 GP over 2 seasons
Rick Meagher - 93 GP early in his career, including career best in goals & points (24 & 43) in 81-82
Jody Hull - most would think of him as Panther, but he started out as Whaler in 88-89 & played 98 games over two seasons, scoring 51 pts

*the crazy trades of 93-94:
November 2, 1993: Eric Weinrich & Patrick Poulin for Steve Larmer & Bryan Marchment
November 2, 1993: Steve Larmer, Nick Kypreos, Barry Richter & 6th rounder for James Patrick & Darren Turcotte
March 10, 1994: James Patrick, Zarley Zalapski & Michael Nylander for Gary Suter, Paul Ranheim & Ted Drury
March 11, 1994: Gary Suter, Randy Cunneyworth & 3rd rounder for Frantisek Kucera & Jocelyn Lemieux

Net out: Eric Weinrich, Zarley Zalapski, Randy Cunneyworth, Michael Nylander, Patrick Poulin, Nick Kypreos, Barry Richter, 3rd round pick & 6th round pick
Net in: Bryan Marchment, Darren Turcotte, Paul Ranheim, Frantisek Kucera, Jocelyn Lemieux & Ted Drury

That's absolutely abysmal return....

Derek Sanderson was traded to the Canucks for futures in February 1977. They released him in October 1977 and he bounced around the CHL with Tulsa and Kansas City before he was signed by the Penguins in March 1978.

Sanderson played only 13 games with the Penguins, scoring 0 goals and 4 assists.

I had absolutely no idea J.S. Giguere played for the Whalers. That's the weirdest name in the thread so far for me.

Here are some Kings goalies certainly better known for their time elsewhere:
Billy Smith (and Rollie Melanson)
Sean Burke
Terry Sawchuk
Glen Healy
Byron Dafoe
Ben Bishop (never understood this acquisition by Lombardi)
Jhonas Enroth
Cristobal Huet
Grant Fuhr (good lord did he ever look done as a King/Sabre)
Al Jansen
Manny Legace

And as much as I'd like to forget the Dan Cloutier experiment, I don't think that's going to happen any time soon.

Sanderson looks like: "Really...? I'm on the Penguins now...? I used to win Cups with Bobby Orr..."

That 1977-78 Pens' team (.425, missed the playoffs) must have had some killer disco parties: Derek Sanderson, Pierre Larouche, Brian Spencer, Dave Schultz.... (not to mention the wonderfully named 'Bob Paradise').

Geez, looking at the stats, that first season in L.A. he had an .860 in 24 games, with basically a 4.0 GAA. That's nasty-bad for 2007.

In fact, if you go by the (admittedly imperfect) "goals saved above average" stat, his performance on a per-game basis was worse than, say, Ron Low's on the 1974-75 Capitals (probably the worst team of all time). Every coach has his blind spots, and Cloutier was Marc Crawford's.
