Probably over 40 players. Not a reasonable ask for a list. Would take a while to provide a response.

Equal value might be players like Matthew Tkachuk, Mark Stone, Filip Forsberg.

It looks clear to me Hughes will be a wing in the NHL. He should still be the top pick in the draft.

You can't trade players until their drafted silly.

In all seriousness, Hughes isn't even a lock to go first overall. There's a lot of players I'd take over Hughes
Good for you. However, Hughes is a lock to go first overall. It’s so hard to get top end, point producing players in this league. He may not be the most complete player in the draft, but you can get a defensive 2C or a reliable 2 way winger to play with him far easier than you can get a potential 100 point player. Players like him elevate his line mates. If you play him with 60 point guys, those guys may become 80 point guys. He is a lock.

A lock? Not even close.

He's really not a lock at all. Kaapo is pushing him. ISS, Pronman, McCleans have all mentioned that scouts are watching him closely to see if he surpasses Hughes. Seems to me it's about a 70-25-5 odds situation right about now.

Hughes isnt a lock to go 1st overall I wouldn't even say hes a lock to be that elite talent you're trying to describe. He seems to be a good player but I don't think most teams would trade their best player for him.

Hughes IQ, skating and passing is elite, but size and defensive play is a concern. Similar to P. Kane will likely shift to Wing likely in the near future to avoid the physical play. He still will be the top pick.

Kakko (personal choice) is a dominate RW that does everything well. Close to elite. Wingers are valued less and has been playing some games as 1C. Playing in the much more difficult professional Men’s League, stats unfairly seem to be less than Hughes.

I don’t believe any team changing their opinions on Hughes. He has been playing at such a high level (albeit inferior league) for so long. However, Kakko performance at the WJC and possible shift to 1C might change teams view by the draft.

Ottawa will trade its 1st over all for the pick.

Ott. already traded its 2019 first to Col.
If they keep on the steady train to Sucksville, their former 1st could be the 1st overall and the Av's would love that.

Their former 1st *could* be 1st overall whether they finish 31st or 17th.

But even at best, even if they finish 31st, it’s still less than 20% likely that pick wins the lottery.

Waiting for Berns to come in and say Hughes is a lock at #1 and when he is picked #1, Berns will gloat about his otherworldly ability to be "correct" on hockey matters.............

In a statement/proposal somewhat like this:

To Carolina:
Zib @ 4X5.35
Vesey @ 2X2.75
Andersson 3X895K
NYR's next 8 3rd rd picks
NYR's 2029 6th
1 autographed photo of Zuccarello in the dolphin suit + 1 wallet size(no autograph)
1 Strawberry Cheesecake from the Cheesecake Factory

To NY:
Pesce @ 6X 4.25
7 1st rd picks to be passed to the Rangers on odd years ending in 1, 3 and 7. (2021, 2023, 2027, 2031, 2033,2037 and 2041)
Carolina's 2022 2nd
2 Aho autographed 8x10's
1 Case Cheerwine

"Great deal for Carolina because Vesey and Andersson have obvious synergy, Rangers get a plethora of "timely" 1st's over the next 1/4 century and a case of coveted Cheerwine........remember when I was right about Stepan and Hughes"?

You will notice I did say *could* exactly as you quoted me, for reasons you may have specified.

5'09 hughes is too frail to go first overall, it would be the first time in history that a below 5'10 go 1ov

He has mcdavid speed with 4 less inches and 25 less lbs

I've heard very, very little about Hughes so far. A lot of people alluding to him and Lafreniere but it seems super slow compared to top players in past years.

McDavid (obviously), Dahlin, Matthews, Eichel.....all were getting a ton of hype way early in advance. Laine eventually too - though closer to end of his draft year.

I feel as though 1-2 years ago people were pointing to Hughes and Lafreniere (I get he's next year only) as 2 blockbuster prospects and the hype around them seems to have died down considerably since.

To answer's OP question - i'm guessing a LOT of players. Easily 30+.
For Dahlin, Eichel and McDavid - maybe Matthews too, but i think as a prospect he was slightly below - at this time in their draft year it was probably closer to ~10 guys you'd trade 1vs1 vs 30 (not McDavid obviously, but the others).

This is so accurate it's frightening.

I hate to break it to you, but they do this stuff every year. Even last year with dahlin you heard the, Svechnikov is the most complete offensive player and you need to watch and see if he can catch Dahlin. What about the Matthews vs Laine vs puljujarvi. They create these debates so you will read their material. Kaapo is gonna be a great player, but in terms of offensive upside, it’s really not close.

Hughes talent is elite. Patrick Kane is about the same height, but weighs 10 lbs more and still went 1st overall. Good judge of their abilities is making the players around them better, especially the Wingers.

Compare the different years:

2017/18:

Farabee (14th OA) - Hughes - Wahlstrom (11th OA)

Last year, he elevated the performances of both Players that were not considered 1st round choices. They benefited by being drafted high in 2018. Performance after the Draft in College without Hughes? Performances have since stagnated or struggled.

2018/19:

Boldy (5th-10th ranked) - Hughes - Caufield (15th-20th ranked)

Interestingly, the Wingers have jumped considerably in the rankings prior to the season. Paired with Hughes, the prospects ranked soared with their production: Boldy was ranked 25th and Caufield is very small ranked 53rd.

So unless Hughes has constantly been blessed with exceptional Wingers for 2 years in a row, there is something special about his game. He's considered a smaller version of McDavid (another level of skill) speed and skills which should be enough. I really like Kakko, but have no doubts he's the 1st overall choice.
