Players Highest in the Scoring Race when Traded

theo fleury himself was 6th when he was traded to colorado.

That felt like a much bigger trade then some of these other ones. Maybe I'm skewing it because he ended up playing really well right after but that was getting national media attention in the US and even in NC apparently as I'd just moved down there as a kid and both adults and kids alike were talking about it.

The answer is Robert Lang, tie for the first place. Recchi is not close, at least 2 of its own teammates would have had more points to start with.

He wins the Hart trophy. The next year he is a Hart trophy finalist but a back-to-back NHL scoring (Art Ross trophy) winner. Then early in the next season he is traded (after 6 points in 6 games) in a blockbuster deal in which he is the marquee player, and goes on to form a Stanley Cup dynasty (twice leading the Leafs in playoff assists to the cup, once in points to the victory!!!).

I am talking about a top-100 player ever. From Chicago to Toronto.

Bentley was tied for 8th in scoring with 4 players on November 3rd when he was traded. Other players were higher in the scoring race at the time they were traded.

6 points in 6 games may have "only" been 8th in scoring in early November ... but...

Just... just after two Hart finalist seasons...

Is a little odd for a b2b Art Ross winner to be traded, but the trade happened so early in the season.

Probably have that trade to thank for the Leafs' first dynasty.
