Player A is a pure goalscorer but is awful defensively. 50 goals+/80 points. But is a consistent -30.

Player B is a 3rd line very strong defensive forward who doesn't score many goals. circa 15 goals/40 points. But is a consistent +20.

Who would you rather have?

Just surround Player A with good defensive players. It will be less expensive and easier to do than trying to pick up a 50 goal scorer.

This is silly. Plus minus has a lot to do with the team you play on. Player A easily...
But player A really stinks defensively. He has loads of brain farts. The only thing he's good at is scoring goals. Even with lots of defensive help, he's at a minus.

Obviously player B, if winning hockey games is at all important.

A, if you only care about individual end of year stats.

TIL a 20 goal and 35 point getter scorer is a 50 goal scorer and 80 point getter....
If he played on the top line all season.

Obviously no coach would do that, but this seems to be the scenario the OP is pushing. A guy who sucks terribly and gets scored on all the time, but can shoot that puck and score some goals back.

Ovechkin is not a consistent -30 player...

You think Pirri would be anywhere close to 50 goals if he was given top line minutes?

Since the last lockout 50 goals has been reached 5 times. 4 by Ovechkin and once by Drai.

There's literally no circumstances in which Brandon Pirri could ever sniff 50 goals in the NHL, none. Even if you had him cherry pick at the blueline every game and forced passes to him it still wouldn't come close to happening.

Even if such a scenario was theoretically possible, it's not even worth discussing because of how unlikely it is.

The OP is describing a non-existent player.

So Ovechkin is a bad example because although he is a 50 goal scorer who is poor defensively, he's not a consistent -30 player and instead you reference a 20 goal scorer who is a +11 in his career?

Everyone should pick player A. Even if you prefer player B for some reason - just trade player A for player B and 2 1st round picks. Player A is simply worth a lot more asset-wise.

A guy who is consistently -30 is a liability on the ice. Which one fits the bill better - Ovie or Pirri?

A guy who is a consistent -30 plays on a bad team.

Go back in time to 2014. You're currently a 6 seed and you're offered either of the players below, both on expiring contracts, for a 3rd rounder at the trade deadline. Who you taking?

Ovechkin
50 goals, 79 points, +35

Plekanec
20 goals, 43 points, +11

I don't see a case for Plekanec. How about Pirri vs Plekanec? I'd take Plekanec.

Ovechkin doesn't belong in this thread. This was about a bad hockey player who spits goals vs a very good hockey player who outplays his opposition.
