That's a really solid deal for the Penguins. I could see him falling off a bit at the end of that contract, but 6.1 is going to be a bargain for what he's going to be bringing in the next 2-3 years (unless he unexpectedly and dramatically falls off).

Pittsburgh doesn't care about the term being long, nor should they. They are going to have to rebuild before Letang's contract expires, at which time they're going to suck anyways so who cares.

The over 35 rules would depend on the structuring of his contract, if they don't have bonuses and the AAV is the same/lower than his previous years they wouldn't get a cap penalty if he retires early (at least that's my understanding).
