Pirates sign Ivan Nova
Seems like a fairly low number - the reports earlier in the offseason were that he was looking for something around 3 years, 36 million, and in this market, you have to assume that someone would step up for that. It's possible that he took less to keep working with Ray Searage or something, but that seems unlikely, so maybe there wasn't as much demand as he expected. He's not exactly the huge upside play, so another explanation might just be that there's less overall interest in just pitching as such, with him being viewed as more of a component part for a solid team than someone who wants to move to being a contender would prioritize.
Still, it's not like many teams ever have enough solid pitching, and that's an extremely low price unless you think his post-trade deadline was all smoke and mirrors.
Rosenthal also tweets that the Pirates are still in pursuit of Quintana after making this signing.
